A Parsons graduate, Karan rose through Anne Klein to head its design team before striking out on her own with husband Stephan Weiss and the Takihyo Corporation. Her 'Essentials' line — seven easy, mix-and-match pieces built around the bodysuit — defined a way of dressing, and in 1988 she extended it with the younger, more affordable DKNY.
Nicknamed the Queen of Seventh Avenue, Karan was named CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year three times and received the council's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2015 she stepped down to focus on her lifestyle brand, Urban Zen, founded in 2007.
