Ellen Tracy is an American company selling women's apparel, cosmetics, perfume and decor — founded as a clothing manufacturer by Herbert Gallen in 1949.

Gallen, who had struggled to obtain fabric under World War II rationing, began making blouses and selling them to Manhattan department stores before forming the company he named Ellen Tracy in 1949. In 1962 he hired recent graduate Linda Allard as a design assistant; within two years she was Director of Design, and she remained with the house for more than 30 years.

The brand was acquired by Liz Claiborne, Inc. in 2002, later passed to Sequential Brands, and was sold to GMA Group in 2021. Its advertising history runs from Carol Alt in 1983 to a young Cindy Crawford in 1987, and in 2010 Macy's became its exclusive sportswear retailer.

Ellen Tracy shopping FAQ

Is Ellen Tracy worth it?+

Ellen Tracy lands squarely in the dependable-workwear-and-basics category, so the value comes from versatility rather than statement pieces. As an American women's apparel house founded in 1949, it has decades of practice making office-appropriate, put-together clothing. If you want pieces that look polished without much fuss, it tends to earn its place in a working wardrobe.

Is Ellen Tracy a good brand for quality?+

For its tier, yes. Ellen Tracy built its name on classic American women's apparel and has since extended into cosmetics, perfume, and decor. Shoppers generally treat it as reliable rather than luxury, which suits its long history as a department-store mainstay since 1949.

Which Ellen Tracy pieces should I start with?+

Begin with the wardrobe workhorses the label is known for: tailored, office-appropriate apparel that mixes easily. Because Ellen Tracy also runs cosmetics and perfume lines, you can round out the look once the clothing basics are in place. Build from the classics outward rather than the other way around.

Where can I buy Ellen Tracy?+

Ellen Tracy has long been a department-store brand, and in 2010 Macy's became its exclusive sportswear retailer, the same year the label launched internationally. Beyond that, its apparel, cosmetics, perfume, and decor reach a broad retail audience, so availability is rarely the obstacle.

Who founded Ellen Tracy and how did it start?+

Ellen Tracy was founded by Herbert Gallen in 1949. He had struggled to get fabric during World War II rationing, and after sourcing some from a friend he began making blouses to sell to the big department stores on Manhattan's 34th Street. He first used his wife's name, Betty Barr, for the label before forming the new company he named Ellen Tracy.

Who was the long-time designer behind Ellen Tracy?+

Designer Linda Allard shaped the label's look for a generation. Hired in 1962 as Herbert Gallen's design assistant, she was named Director of Design within two years and stayed with the company for more than 30 years, defining much of the polished, wearable identity the brand is remembered for.

Who owns Ellen Tracy now?+

Ownership has changed hands several times. Ellen Tracy was acquired by Liz Claiborne, Inc. in 2002 and became a wholly owned subsidiary, later passed to Sequential Brands, and was then sold to GMA Group in 2021, where it sits today.

Which models famously fronted Ellen Tracy campaigns?+

The label has a notable advertising history. Its 1983 campaign featured model Carol Alt, and in 1987 it spotlighted a young Cindy Crawford before she became a household name, a sign of the brand's reach in American fashion at the time.

Is Ellen Tracy a luxury brand?+

Not in the couture sense. Ellen Tracy is an established American apparel company that also sells cosmetics, perfume, and decor, positioned as accessible, classic everyday wear rather than high luxury. Think dependable polish for work and weekend rather than red-carpet drama.
