Story & heritage
Fjällräven was founded in 1960 by Åke Nordin, whose first breakthrough was a light aluminium-framed backpack. The Kånken Backpack carries that problem-solving origin into the city: the official Kånken story says it was created in 1978 to help address back problems among Swedish schoolchildren.
The classic Kånken page describes the bag as one of Fjällräven’s most beloved products, suited to school, work, trekking and travel. Its simple square face, fox patch and top handles make it the brand’s clearest crossover object.
Materials & craft
Official product copy lists hard-wearing, water-repellent Vinylon F, a zip that opens the full main compartment, a removable seat cushion, simple shoulder straps, top handles, side pockets and a small front pocket.
How to choose & style
Choose the classic Kånken when the outfit needs a clean rectangle rather than a technical hiking silhouette. Bright colours read campus and playful; dark navy, black or forest tones feel closer to Fjällräven’s outdoor roots.
