Fernanda Gattinoni's strategic positioning let her meet and dress illustrious clients, from the American ambassador Clare Boothe Luce to actresses Silvana Pampanini, Lana Turner and Kim Novak. In 1996 a prêt-à-porter collection was added to the maison's high-fashion line, following a restyling by Raniero Gattinoni and Stefano Dominella, the house's current President.

Since 1993, designer Guillermo Mariotto has led the creative direction of the Gattinoni lines and today directs the Couture line. In 2002 the house designed the new uniforms for the Italian Army.

Gattinoni shopping FAQ

Is Gattinoni couture worth it?+

Gattinoni is one of Italy's historic couture houses, founded in Rome's golden age of fashion and cinema, so its appeal is heritage and hand-craft rather than off-the-rack convenience. If you value a maison with a deep dressmaking lineage and a couture line that still leads the house today, it carries a pedigree few brands can match.

Who was Fernanda Gattinoni, the founder?+

Fernanda Gattinoni founded the house in 1946, choosing a strategic location for her Maison near the Hotel Excelsior. That position let her meet and dress illustrious figures, and her name became tied to a celebrated era of Italian style.

Which famous women did Fernanda Gattinoni dress?+

Her early clientele reads like a roll call of mid-century icons. From her Maison near the Hotel Excelsior she dressed people such as the American ambassador Clare Boothe Luce, Evita Perón, and actresses including Ingrid Bergman, Anna Magnani, Audrey Hepburn, Silvana Pampanini, Lana Turner and Kim Novak.

Who is the creative director of Gattinoni today?+

Since 1993, Guillermo Mariotto has led the house, taking over creative direction of all the Gattinoni lines after the untimely death of Raniero Gattinoni. Today he creatively directs and supervises the Gattinoni Couture line, which remains the heart of the maison.

Where is Gattinoni from?+

Gattinoni is an Italian fashion brand, rooted in Rome where Fernanda Gattinoni established her Maison in 1946. Rome's role as a center of Italian haute couture is part of the house's identity.

What is the difference between Gattinoni Couture and the other Gattinoni lines?+

Gattinoni began as a high-fashion maison, and in 1996 a prêt-à-porter collection was added after a restyling of the label by Raniero Gattinoni and Stefano Dominella. Over time the house expanded into lines such as Gattinoni Boutique, Tempo, Gattinoni Basic, Gattinoni Softwear and Gattinoni Domus household linen, while Gattinoni Couture remains the flagship made-to-order line.

Who is the president of the Gattinoni house?+

Stefano Dominella is the current president of the maison. He was part of the 1996 restyling of the label alongside Raniero Gattinoni, and a number of the house's extended brands were added under his stewardship.

Does Gattinoni make anything besides couture?+

Yes, the house has stretched well beyond the runway. In 1997 the Gattinoni perfume launched, followed by an entire line of beauty products, and the house has carried lines spanning ready-to-wear, basics and even household linen under the Gattinoni Domus name.

Is it true Gattinoni designed uniforms for the Italian Army?+

It is. In 2002 the Gattinoni fashion house designed the new army uniforms on behalf of the Italian Army, a notable commission that took the maison's tailoring beyond couture and into national service dress.

Why is Gattinoni a meaningful name in Italian fashion?+

Because it bridges eras. Founded in 1946 and tied to the glamorous figures of mid-century Rome, it carried its couture craft forward through a 1996 ready-to-wear expansion and into the hands of Guillermo Mariotto. That continuity, from Fernanda Gattinoni's atelier to today's couture line, is what gives the house its standing.
