An Italian designer working in Paris, Giambattista Valli has shown both ready-to-wear and haute couture under his own name since 2004 — and is one of the few foreign designers granted membership of the historic Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

Born and raised in Rome, Valli studied art before a foundation course in illustration at Central Saint Martins in London. He cut his teeth at Roberto Capucci, Fendi and Krizia, then ran Emanuel Ungaro as creative director from 1998 to 2004 — credited with reviving the house — before launching his eponymous brand and showing his first ready-to-wear collection in Paris in 2005.

The label shows ready-to-wear and couture semiannually in Paris, with its first couture collection staged in July 2011. Headquartered since 2014 in a historic building on Rue Boissy d'Anglas, the house keeps flagships from Paris and London to Doha, Seoul and Beijing. Groupe Artémis took a stake in 2017 and majority control in 2021; in 2026 Valli reached an agreement to reacquire full ownership of his own name.

Giambattista Valli shopping FAQ

Is a Giambattista Valli tulle gown worth the investment?+

For an occasion piece, many owners say yes. The voluminous tulle gowns are the silhouette the house is famous for, the kind of dress that has dominated red carpets, and they are widely treated as investment pieces rather than seasonal buys. The trade-off is that the bodices are fitted and built to anchor all that volume, so the fit is exacting. If you want one show-stopping dress that reads as couture, it tends to earn its keep.

Why is Giambattista Valli so expensive?+

Valli is one of the few non-French designers admitted to the historic Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, and he showed his first couture collection in July 2011. Couture-level construction, the labour-intensive layering of tulle, and a small, Paris-based production operation all sit behind the price. You are paying for hand-finishing and an haute couture pedigree, not factory scale.

Was the Giambattista Valli x H&M collaboration the real thing?+

It was a genuine collaboration. In 2019 Valli released a capsule collection for men and women with H&M, his first foray into designing menswear. It put his signature tiered-tulle look within reach of a far wider audience, which is exactly why it sold out so fast. The pieces carry his design DNA even if they are not couture construction.

What is Giambattista Valli best known for?+

The romantic, voluminous tulle gown is the brand's signature, alongside floral ready-to-wear that balances drama with wearability. Valli shows both ready-to-wear and haute couture in Paris, semi-annually, during the couture and fashion-week calendars. That dual ready-to-wear and couture identity is the heart of the house.

Who is Giambattista Valli and where did he train?+

Giambattista Valli is an Italian designer, born and raised in Rome, who began a foundation course in illustration at Central Saint Martins in London in 1987. Before launching his own house he held roles at Roberto Capucci, Fendi and Krizia, then served as creative director of Emanuel Ungaro from 1998 to 2004. Ungaro credited him with revitalising the house and named him as his successor.

When and where was the Giambattista Valli brand founded?+

Valli launched his eponymous brand in 2004 and held his first ready-to-wear show in Paris in 2005, having moved there from Italy. The house has operated out of Paris ever since. Since 2014 its headquarters and main store have occupied a historic building on Rue Boissy d'Anglas in the city's 8th arrondissement.

What is the difference between Giambattista Valli and Giamba?+

In 2014 Valli launched Giamba, a younger sister ready-to-wear line, with a runway show in Milan. The main Giambattista Valli label spans both ready-to-wear and haute couture, while Giamba was conceived as the more youthful, accessible offshoot. If you are choosing, the main line is the couture-anchored one.

Who owns Giambattista Valli now?+

Ownership has shifted over the years. Groupe Artémis took a minority stake in 2017 and assumed majority control in 2021. In 2026 Valli reached an agreement to acquire full ownership of the brand back from Artémis, returning the house to its founder.

Where can I buy Giambattista Valli?+

The brand runs flagship stores in Paris, London, Milan, Saint Tropez, Doha, Seoul and Beijing, and its international distribution reaches more than 245 selling points. For pieces beyond the boutiques, established luxury retailers and consignment platforms are the usual route. Buying from authorised stockists is the safest way to be sure of authenticity.

Has Giambattista Valli designed anything beyond gowns?+

Yes, his range is broader than the red carpet suggests. From 2008 to 2017 he was Creative Director of Moncler Gamme Rouge, focusing on women's puffer jackets, and the house has since launched its own activewear capsule. He has also collaborated with MAC Cosmetics since 2005 and, in 2022, created a tableware line with Moda Operandi made with artisans including the Viennese porcelain house Augarten Wien.

Which celebrities wear Giambattista Valli?+

The house has a deep red-carpet following. Its designs have been worn by figures including Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, Anya Taylor-Joy and Queen Rania of Jordan, among many others. Valli also designed a wedding dress for Jessica Biel, which speaks to the trust placed in the house for milestone moments.

How should I care for a Giambattista Valli tulle piece?+

Treat tulle as the delicate material it is: store the dress hanging with room around the skirt so the layers do not crush, and avoid folding it under weight. Spot-clean cautiously and lean on a specialist cleaner experienced with couture for anything more, since heat and machine handling can flatten the volume permanently. Careful storage is what keeps the silhouette looking as it did on the runway.
