Genny

An Ancona tailoring workshop that grew into a Made-in-Italy house — and a launchpad for Versace and Lacroix.

Genny
Re-checked daily
Founded in Ancona in 1962 by Arnaldo Girombelli, Genny grew from a small skirt-and-blouse workshop into one of Italy's defining ready-to-wear names.

Girombelli built the label out of his hometown boutique and its adjacent tailor shop, naming it for his eldest daughter. A line of pleated oblique skirts — made with a new cloth-treatment technique — brought early success in the late 1960s.

Genny became a proving ground for great talent: Gianni Versace designed its youthful Byblos line from 1973, later succeeded by Guy Paulin and Christian Lacroix, while Versace went on to launch the experimental Complice line. After Girombelli's death his wife Donatella chaired the group; Prada acquired the label in 2001, and Swinger International relaunched it in 2011 with Gabriele Colangelo as designer.

Genny shopping FAQ

Is Genny connected to Gianni Versace?+

Yes, and it is one of the most interesting threads in the brand's story. In 1973 Genny introduced a youthful line called Byblos, and Gianni Versace became its designer. Versace later launched another Genny experimental line, Complice, making Genny an early platform for one of Italy's most famous designers.

When and where was Genny founded?+

Genny is an Italian ready-to-wear manufacturer founded in Ancona in 1962 by Arnaldo Girombelli. Girombelli, a native of Ancona, owned a boutique with a small adjacent tailor workshop for skirts and blouses. After expanding that workshop, he founded the Genny label for his own creations in 1962.

What does the name Genny mean?+

The name is personal. When Arnaldo Girombelli founded the label in 1962, he named it Genny after his eldest daughter. It is a family name rather than an invented brand word, which fits the house's intimate, workshop-rooted origins in Ancona.

What first made Genny successful?+

In the second half of the 1960s, Genny found large success thanks to a line of pleated oblique skirts, made possible by a new cloth-treatment technique. That early innovation in how fabric was worked set the tone for the brand's reputation. It grew from a small Ancona tailoring workshop into a recognised ready-to-wear name on the strength of that craft.

What is the relationship between Genny and Byblos?+

Byblos began life inside Genny. It was introduced in 1973 as a youthful line with Gianni Versace as designer, and later Guy Paulin and his assistant Christian Lacroix took over there. In 1983 Byblos became an independent company, so what is now a separate label originally grew out of the Genny house.

Who designed for Genny besides Versace?+

The Byblos line within Genny passed from Gianni Versace to Guy Paulin and his assistant Christian Lacroix, an extraordinary run of talent for one house. After the brand's later relaunch, Swinger International appointed Gabriele Colangelo as the new designer. That lineage of designers is a big part of why Genny is remembered as a serious Italian fashion name.

Why did Genny stop, and how did it come back?+

In 2001 Prada acquired the label, and Genny stopped production in 2004. The brand was then acquired in 2011 by Swinger International, which decided to relaunch it and appointed Gabriele Colangelo as designer. So today's Genny is a revived heritage house rather than a continuous operation.

Who led Genny after its founder?+

After the death of Arnaldo Girombelli, his wife Donatella became the chairwoman of the group. That kept the house in the founding family's hands during a key stretch of its history. It is a reminder that Genny was very much a family enterprise at its core.

Has Genny received any recognition?+

Yes. On 21 July 2018 the brand received the Tao Award for fashion during the Taomoda event in Taormina. For a relaunched heritage label, that kind of recognition signalled renewed standing in Italian fashion. It came after the brand's revival under Swinger International.

What is the appeal of Genny as an Italian luxury brand?+

Genny embodies the Made-in-Italy tradition, born from a tailoring workshop in Ancona and built on craft like its early pleated-skirt technique. Its history as a launchpad for designers such as Gianni Versace gives it a pedigree few revived labels can claim. For lovers of Italian ready-to-wear heritage, that backstory is much of the draw.

Is Genny still in business today?+

Genny is a heritage Italian house that was relaunched after a pause in production. It stopped under Prada ownership in 2004 and was revived from 2011 by Swinger International. So while its golden era was the 1980s and 1990s, the name lives on as a relaunched brand.
