Girombelli built the label out of his hometown boutique and its adjacent tailor shop, naming it for his eldest daughter. A line of pleated oblique skirts — made with a new cloth-treatment technique — brought early success in the late 1960s.
Genny became a proving ground for great talent: Gianni Versace designed its youthful Byblos line from 1973, later succeeded by Guy Paulin and Christian Lacroix, while Versace went on to launch the experimental Complice line. After Girombelli's death his wife Donatella chaired the group; Prada acquired the label in 2001, and Swinger International relaunched it in 2011 with Gabriele Colangelo as designer.
