Geox

Italian footwear built on a patented idea — breathable, waterproof soles that let feet breathe.

Geox
Re-checked daily
Founded in Italy in 1995 by Mario Polegato, Geox built a global shoe and clothing business on one idea: footwear made with breathable and waterproof fabrics.

The breathable-membrane concept became the brand's signature, carrying Geox from shoes into clothing. In 2009 Polegato's family investment arm, LIR, acquired the assets of Italian sportswear company Diadora.

Geox manufactures across China, Indonesia and Vietnam. In September 2023 Penélope Cruz became the brand's first ambassador.

Geox shopping FAQ

Do Geox breathable shoes really work?+

That is the question everyone asks, since Geox is built around breathable and waterproof fabrics. The system pairs a perforated sole with a membrane designed to let perspiration escape as vapour while keeping liquid water out. Most wearers find the result is cooler, drier feet, which is exactly the comfort promise the brand is known for.

Why are Geox shoes so expensive, and are they worth it?+

Geox positions itself as a premium maker, and the price reflects its patented breathable construction and materials rather than just a logo. Reviewers generally land on a positive verdict: you are paying for the breathability technology, comfort and durability, which many find worth it if you are on your feet a lot. Whether it suits you ultimately comes down to budget and how much you value the breathable system.

What makes Geox different from other shoe brands?+

The whole identity rests on one idea: shoes manufactured with breathable and waterproof fabrics. That perforated-sole-plus-membrane approach is the brand's signature and is unusual in mainstream footwear. It is why Geox is talked about as the shoe that breathes rather than just another comfort label.

When and where was Geox founded?+

Geox S.p.A. is an Italian company, founded in 1995 by Mario Polegato. From the start its identity was tied to breathable, waterproof footwear and clothing. That Italian origin and a single founding idea have shaped the brand ever since.

Who founded Geox?+

Geox was founded by Mario Polegato in 1995. He also expanded the business beyond shoes: in 2009 Geox agreed with Italian sportswear company Diadora to have Polegato buy its assets through his family's investment arm, LIR. So the founder's influence extended well past Geox's own product line.

Where are Geox shoes made?+

Geox's production sites are in China, Indonesia and Vietnam. The company also formerly ran a plant in Vranje, Serbia, which opened in 2015 but closed in July 2021 with the loss of 1,200 jobs. So while the brand is Italian in identity, its manufacturing footprint is international.

Does Geox also make clothing?+

It does. Geox is described as an Italian brand of shoe and clothing, both manufactured with the breathable and waterproof fabrics the company is known for. The same technology philosophy that defines its footwear carries over to its apparel. So the breathable concept is the through-line across the whole brand, not just the shoes.

Who is the face of Geox?+

On 20 September 2023, Penélope Cruz became the first brand ambassador for Geox. It was a notable first for a brand whose marketing had long centred on its technology rather than a celebrity face. Her appointment marked a shift toward a more personality-led image.

Has Geox faced any financial trouble?+

Yes. On 8 September 2020, Geox filed for bankruptcy in Canada, part of a wider stretch of difficulty for the company. It also closed its Serbian Vranje plant in 2021. These were real setbacks, though the brand's core breathable-shoe identity has remained intact.

How should I think about fit and care for Geox shoes?+

Because the comfort case rests on the breathable sole and membrane, the priority is keeping that system working: let the shoes dry out fully between wears and avoid clogging the perforated sole. Choose a fit that lets air circulate rather than cramping the foot, since airflow is the entire point. Treated this way, the breathability and durability Geox is praised for tend to hold up over time.

Are Geox shoes a good everyday choice?+

For many wearers, yes, precisely because the breathable, waterproof construction targets all-day comfort. They are often recommended for people on their feet for long stretches who want dry, comfortable feet. As with any premium footwear, the value depends on how much you prize that breathability over a lower price.
