If you measure worth in fabric and longevity, Hanro tends to justify itself. The brand orients its lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear toward the luxury market in design, materials and finishing, and the pieces are widely regarded as high-quality. Many owners keep them in rotation for years, which is the real test of a premium basic.

Two things drive the price: the materials and where the work happens. Roughly 80% of Hanro's textiles are knitted at the Arula plant in Mäder, Vorarlberg, with sewing in Portugal, so you are paying for European production rather than the cheapest possible source. The fabrics themselves are fine natural fibres, and that finishing is what gives the pieces their soft, lightweight hand.

Both stories are true at different points in its history. Hanro was founded in 1884 in Liestal, Switzerland, by Albert Handschin, and remained Swiss for generations. Since 2004 the headquarters have been in Götzis, in the Austrian region of Vorarlberg, where parent company the Huber Group is based.

It is a small piece of company history folded into a word. Hanro is a portmanteau of the surnames of the two founders, Albert Handschin and Carl Ronus, who ran the business together as Handschin & Ronus. The Hanro trademark was registered in 1913.

Hanro is a specialist in lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear for both women and men. The house started as a hand-knitting company and built its reputation on next-to-skin pieces rather than outerwear. If you are buying your first item, a soft cotton brief or a classic camisole is the most representative way in.

More than once, and usually in iconic frames. Marilyn Monroe wore Hanro briefs in the famous subway-grate scene in The Seven Year Itch (1955), Nicole Kidman appeared in a white Hanro camisole in Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Dakota Johnson wore the brand's white cotton briefs in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). It is also name-checked in Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl novels.

The supply chain is spread across Europe. About 80% of the textiles are manufactured at the Arula production plant in Mäder, Vorarlberg, which belongs to Huber Holding; the sewing is done in Portugal, and the warehouse sits in Hungary. It is a deliberately European footprint that matches the brand's price positioning.

Hanro is part of the Huber Group. After three generations as a family-run enterprise, Huber Tricot acquired a 75% share in 1991 and took over the remaining 25% two years later. Today Hanro International GmbH operates as part of that group, alongside affiliated brands Skiny, Huber and HOM.

Lean on feel and finishing rather than logos. Genuine Hanro is built from fine, long-staple natural fibres with a notably soft, lightweight hand and clean, even stitching, and it is sold through specialty retailers, department stores and Hanro's own boutiques and outlets. If a deal turns up far from those channels at an unlikely price, treat it with caution.

It comes down to heritage versus mood. Hanro leans understated and classic, drawing on more than a century of know-how in fine natural fibres, so its pieces read quiet and put-together. Eberjey skews softer and more overtly feminine. If you want loungewear that disappears into your wardrobe and lasts, Hanro is the more conservative pick.

Treat them gently and they will reward you. Fine cotton, modal and silk blends do best on a cool, delicate wash and laid flat or hung to dry rather than tumbled hot, which protects both the fibres and the soft finish. Owners who launder them carefully report years of wear, which is much of the point of buying at this level.

Because the line is built around evergreen basics rather than seasonal trends, you rarely need to chase a moment. End-of-season clearances at department stores and Hanro's own outlet stores are the usual windows for better pricing, while bestselling cotton styles stay in the range year-round. Buy the staples when you need them and save the hunting for the extras.
