Created and patented in 1962 by Brazilian manufacturer Alpargatas S.A., Havaianas (stylized in lowercase) grew from a humble rubber flip-flop into a symbol of Brazilian culture.

The name comes from the Portuguese for "Hawaiians," an homage to the islands where rubber flip-flops originated. Early designs were a plain blue-and-white working shoe; color and variety took off after a serendipitous green batch in 1969. Today the brand controls roughly 80% of Brazil's rubber-slipper market, with signature touches like the Greek-pattern straps and rice-grain sole.

Now sold in over 100 countries with about 200 million pairs a year, Havaianas has appeared with celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Kelly Slater and on the runways of Jean Paul Gaultier and Saint Laurent. In 2017 the brand was sold to a pool of Brazilian investors — Itaúsa, Cambuhy Investimentos and Brasil Warrant.

Havaianas shopping FAQ

Are Havaianas worth it?+

For warm-weather, casual wear, most owners find Havaianas worth the money. They are made of rubber rather than cheap foam, which is why pairs tend to feel better underfoot and last far longer than bargain flip-flops. If you need serious arch support for long walks, though, a flat rubber sandal has its limits, so think of them as beach-and-lounge footwear.

Are Havaianas better than cheap foam flip-flops?+

Generally yes, and the difference comes down to the material. Havaianas are built from rubber, which holds its shape, resists wear, and grips better than the soft foam used in most inexpensive flip-flops. That durability is a big reason buyers keep returning to them despite the higher price.

How long do Havaianas last?+

With light, casual use they can last for years, and the rubber construction is the reason why. Owners often report getting many seasons out of a single pair, far beyond what a foam flip-flop typically survives. Longevity does vary with how hard you wear them, but durability is one of the brand's defining strengths.

How do I spot fake Havaianas?+

Counterfeits are common because the brand is so widely copied. Look for the signature design cues on a genuine pair: the rice-grain pattern engraved into the footbed and the Greek artistic pattern along the straps. Buying from official stockists rather than unverified sellers is the simplest way to be sure you are getting the real thing.

What makes Havaianas recognizable?+

A few iconic design features set them apart. Genuine Havaianas carry a Greek artistic pattern along the straps, a rice-grain pattern engraved in the sole, and a flat rectangular brick-layer pattern on the outer sole. Together these details make a real pair easy to identify and have become part of the brand's visual signature.

Where are Havaianas from?+

Havaianas is a Brazilian brand of flip-flop sandals, founded in 1962 by the manufacturer Alpargatas S.A. Over time the sandals became a symbol of Brazilian culture, tied to the country's vibrant, carefree lifestyle. That Brazilian identity is central to the brand's appeal worldwide.

What does the name Havaianas mean?+

The name comes from the feminine form of the Portuguese word for Hawaiians. It was chosen as homage to Hawaii, the popular vacation destination where rubber flip-flops originated, and the original design drew inspiration from hybrid Hawaiian and Japanese zori sandals. The name signals exactly the breezy, beachside spirit the brand trades on.

When were Havaianas created?+

Havaianas were created and patented in 1962 by Brazilian manufacturer Alpargatas S.A. In the 1960s the flip-flop was a practical, working-class shoe made only in a blue-and-white design, before colour and variety expanded the line. The brand officially went global in 2000.

Why are Havaianas so popular?+

Their popularity rests on a mix of durability, simple colourful design, and cultural identity. In Brazil the brand controls roughly 80% of the rubber-slipper market, and worldwide it sells about 200 million pairs a year across more than 100 countries. That reach has made Havaianas one of the most recognizable flip-flop names on the planet.

Have Havaianas appeared in high fashion?+

Yes, the brand has reached well beyond the beach. Havaianas have featured in campaigns with celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Kelly Slater, and have appeared on haute couture runways for designers including Jean Paul Gaultier and Saint Laurent. That crossover helped turn a humble rubber sandal into a recognizable fashion item.

Which Havaianas should I buy first?+

For most people a classic pair is the natural starting point, since the rubber sole and signature footbed deliver the brand's core appeal at its simplest. If you live somewhere cooler or want a slightly different look, the brand also makes closed-toe and embellished styles. Match the pair to where you will actually wear them, beach and lounging being where they shine most.
