Jockey International is the American underwear, sleepwear and sportswear maker based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that invented the first men's Y-front brief in 1934 — a trademark now recognized in 120 countries.

Its origin is a blizzard. Founded as Coopers, Inc. by Samuel T. Cooper in 1876 as a hosiery business, the company sold the world's first briefs on January 19, 1935 at Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago — designed by 'apparel engineer' Arthur Kneibler with a Y-shaped fly, and dubbed the Jockey for offering support like a jockstrap. Over 30,000 pairs sold within three months.

The firm renamed itself Jockey in the early 1970s and kept innovating — the 'Skants' bikini brief in 1958, the Jockey For Her line in 1982, and a 2011 range using NASA-developed Outlast temperature technology.

Jockey shopping FAQ

Is Jockey underwear worth it?+

For most shoppers, yes. Jockey built its name on the Y-Front brief it invented in 1934, and the brand still trades on a reputation for comfort, fit and longevity rather than fashion novelty. If you want a dependable, well-supported everyday staple from a maker that has been refining men's underwear since the 1930s, it earns its place. Bargain hunters chasing the lowest possible price may be just as happy with basics, but Jockey's appeal is the predictable, broken-in feel its loyalists come back for.

Are Jockey briefs good quality?+

Jockey's classic cotton briefs are generally regarded as durable and true to the support-first idea behind the original Y-Front design. Many wearers keep the same style going for years, prizing the secure fit over flashy details. As with any long-running staple, individual experiences with elastic and sizing vary, so it's worth checking the fabric and rise on the specific line you're buying rather than assuming every cut feels identical.

How does Jockey compare to Hanes?+

Both are American underwear institutions, but they sit at slightly different points. Jockey leans into its heritage as the brand that invented the men's brief, positioning itself a notch above basics on comfort and finish. Hanes is typically the more value-driven, high-volume choice. If you prioritise a refined, supportive fit and don't mind paying a little more, Jockey is the natural pick; if rock-bottom price is the goal, the gap narrows.

What is Jockey best known for?+

Jockey is famous for inventing the world's first men's Y-Front brief. Designed by so-called 'apparel engineer' Arthur Kneibler and first sold in January 1935 at Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago, the brief dispensed with leg sections and used a Y-shaped overlapping fly. Over 30,000 pairs sold within three months, and the design became the template for modern men's underwear.

Where did the Jockey name come from?+

When the company introduced its leg-free, Y-front brief in 1935, it dubbed the garment the Jockey, claiming it offered support like a jockstrap. The name stuck so firmly to the product that the company itself eventually adopted it, renaming from Coopers to Jockey Menswear in 1971 and Jockey International the following year.

When and where was Jockey founded?+

The business began in 1876 as Coopers, Inc., founded by Samuel T. Cooper in St. Joseph, Michigan, as a hosiery company. Cooper reportedly started it after hearing that lumberjacks suffered from poorly made wool socks. The firm moved into undergarments around 1900, and the company is today based in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

What is the Jockey For Her line?+

Jockey For Her is the brand's line of women's intimate apparel and underwear, launched in 1982. It carried Jockey's comfort-and-fit philosophy into women's basics, broadening the company well beyond the men's briefs that made its name. It remains a core part of Jockey's offering for women, sleepwear and everyday essentials.

What are Jockey Skants?+

Skants were the first mass-market men's bikini brief, introduced by Jockey in 1958. Inspired by women's bikinis, the low-cut nylon-and-elastic brief had no front fly and only a small support panel. They sold well through the 1960s and 1970s and are still produced, mostly in cotton, for sale in several countries.

Are Jockey products still made the original way?+

Jockey has evolved its materials well beyond the cotton of its early briefs. In 2011 it launched a line using Outlast Technology, originally developed to help NASA astronauts stay comfortable in changing temperatures and reduce sweating. So while the supportive Y-front silhouette remains its signature, the fabrics and fits have been modernised over the decades.

Does Jockey support any charitable causes?+

Yes. Jockey sponsors the Jockey Being Family Foundation, a charity focused on supporting families after they have adopted a child. The foundation works to raise awareness of and improve access to post-adoption services in the United States, and distributes Jockey-branded backpacks and tote bags to adopted children and their parents.

How should I choose between Jockey's many brief styles?+

Start with how much coverage and support you want. The classic full-rise brief leans on the original supportive Y-front idea, while lower-cut and bikini-style cuts like the Skants lineage offer a trimmer, lighter feel. Consider the fabric too, from breathable cotton classics to performance fabrics, and let your day-to-day activity guide the choice rather than the style name alone.
