Johnston & Murphy traces its roots to the William J. Dudley Shoe Company, founded in Newark in 1850 by a craftsman schooled in the English shoemaking tradition.

The partnership that gave the house its name formed in 1882, when Newark businessman William A. Murphy joined James Johnston; by 1887 the firm was turning out over two thousand pairs a week. In 1850 President Millard Fillmore commissioned a pair, and Johnston & Murphy has made shoes for every subsequent U.S. president.

Acquired by Genesco in 1951 and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, the brand has grown from dress shoes into footwear, apparel, leather goods and luggage — including the comfort-engineered XC4 collection, built with leather from Chicago's Horween tannery.

Johnston & Murphy shopping FAQ

Are Johnston & Murphy shoes worth it?+

For a great many buyers, yes. Johnston & Murphy sits in a comfortable middle ground: a genuine heritage shoemaker whose pedigree runs back to 1850, but priced below the very top tier. If you want a dependable American dress or dress-casual shoe with real history behind it rather than a four-figure investment pair, it is an easy recommendation.

Are Johnston & Murphy shoes good quality?+

They are a respected mid-to-upper traditional name with deep roots. The line traces back to a master craftsman, William J. Dudley, schooled in classic English shoemaking, and that tradition carried through generations. One nice detail of the heritage: leather shells for some footwear are supplied by the Horween Leather Company in Chicago.

How do Johnston & Murphy shoes compare to Allen Edmonds?+

They are natural rivals at slightly different price points. Both are long-running American makers, but Johnston & Murphy's history is the older of the two, reaching back to the 1850 William J. Dudley Shoe Company in Newark, New Jersey. Many shoppers see Johnston & Murphy as the more accessible heritage option, which is exactly why the two names come up together so often.

What is the XC4 collection from Johnston & Murphy?+

XC4 is the brand's comfort-focused line, launched around 2010. The letters stand for extreme comfort, and the number nods to four features: the shoes are moisture-wicking, lightweight, have additional cushioning, and include an extra removable insole for proper fit. It came as part of the brand's wider shift toward more casual footwear alongside its traditional dress shoes.

Is it true Johnston & Murphy has made shoes for US presidents?+

Yes, and it is one of the brand's proudest claims. In 1850 President Millard Fillmore asked founder William J. Dudley to make custom footwear, and Johnston & Murphy has designed the shoes of every subsequent president. Ahead of Donald Trump's second inauguration, the brand even exhibited its collection of presidential footwear at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.

When and where was Johnston & Murphy founded?+

Its roots go back to the William J. Dudley Shoe Company, founded in 1850 in Newark, New Jersey. The name we know came later: James Johnston joined as a partner in 1880, and when William A. Murphy joined in 1882 the firm became Johnston & Murphy. The company is now based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Where are Johnston & Murphy shoes made?+

Today they are made by independent, third-party contractors rather than in the brand's own US plant; Johnston & Murphy stopped making shoes in the United States in 2017. The headquarters and operations moved to Nashville, Tennessee, after the brand was acquired in 1951, having originated in Newark, New Jersey.

Who owns Johnston & Murphy?+

It is a subsidiary of Genesco, which bought the company in 1951 when it was known as General Shoe Corporation. After the purchase, Genesco closed the Newark, New Jersey, operation and moved everything to its home city of Nashville, Tennessee, where Johnston & Murphy is still based.

Does Johnston & Murphy connect to the Goodyear welt?+

There is a charming historical link. The late historian William Starr Myers noted that Charles Goodyear, inventor of the Goodyear welt, was a frequent visitor of founder William J. Dudley, the two reportedly conferring into the night. It is a small but telling marker of how close the brand's origins sit to the foundations of modern shoemaking.

What kind of shoes is Johnston & Murphy best known for?+

Classic American dress and dress-casual footwear, with a heritage in higher-fashion shoes built on the durability of its early work shoes. A historically popular line was the Country Club Series of golf shoes, heavily advertised in magazines like Vanity Fair and The Saturday Evening Post. The brand's first slogan summed up its ambition: 'The best shoes anybody can buy.'

Does Johnston & Murphy make more than shoes now?+

Yes. While footwear is the foundation, the company designs, sources, markets and distributes apparel, leather goods and luggage as well. It expanded the men's line to include business cases and luggage, and in 2008 introduced a women's line of footwear, leather goods, accessories and outerwear.
