Lane studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, worked on Vogue's art staff, and designed footwear for Delman and the New York branch of Christian Dior, training under Roger Vivier. He began designing jewelry while producing bejeweled footwear, and came to attention after the Duchess of Windsor bought several pieces and recommended him to her friends.
His clients included Jacqueline Kennedy — who commissioned copies so she could wear jewels freely while keeping the originals safe — along with Princess Diana, Nancy Reagan, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn. He won a special Coty Award in 1966 and the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1968, and later became a fixture on QVC.
