Swarovski is an Austrian luxury goods house founded in 1895 by Daniel Swarovski in Wattens, Tyrol, with one guiding vision: to make 'a diamond for everyone' through affordable, precision-cut crystal.

A glass-cutter's son from Bohemia, Daniel Swarovski patented an electric cutting machine in 1892 and, with financier Armand Kosmann and Franz Weis, founded the company three years later. The factory in Wattens tapped local hydroelectric power for the energy-intensive grinding his patents required, and its crystal-cutting machines made mass production of crystals possible for the first time. The swan logo arrived in 1988, succeeding the earlier edelweiss.

Still family-associated for generations, Swarovski spans the Crystal Business, Swarovski Optik (binoculars, scopes and telescopes, traced to a pair Wilhelm Swarovski built in 1935) and the tool-maker Tyrolit. The house runs the Kristallwelten museum at its original Wattens site and has supplied the crystal star atop the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree since 2004.

Swarovski shopping FAQ

Are Swarovski crystals real diamonds?+

No — Swarovski makes precision-cut crystal glass, not gemstones. The company's glass is produced by melting quartz sand, soda, potash and other ingredients at high temperatures, and since 2012 all Swarovski crystal glass has been lead-free. Daniel Swarovski's founding vision was to make "a diamond for everyone" by making crystals affordable, so the appeal is brilliance at an accessible price rather than the rarity of a diamond.

Is Swarovski worth it?+

Swarovski is regarded as one of the most prestigious makers of luxury goods, and its crystal is engineered specifically to refract light brilliantly. Treatments such as Aurora Borealis (AB) give the surface a rainbow appearance, and the 2004 Xilion cut was created to optimise sparkle. Worth depends on what you want: a beautifully cut, affordable crystal designed for shine, not a precious stone that holds value like a diamond.

Are Swarovski figurines collectible?+

Yes — Swarovski's figurines are collectible, and the very first one the company produced was a stylised mouse. A smaller version, now called the "replica mouse," is still sold today. Collectors prize the clarity that comes from Swarovski's patented glass-cutting technology, and condition and rarity tend to drive how sought-after a given piece becomes.

What is Swarovski's signature product?+

Swarovski is best known for precision-cut crystal — jewellery, rhinestones, and crystal-based animal figurines, ornaments and home decor. The Swarovski Crystal Business is one of the highest-grossing units in the group, spanning roughly 3,000 stores across about 170 countries. The crystal figurines and sculptures are perhaps the most recognisable expression of the brand.

Where and when was Swarovski founded?+

Swarovski was founded in 1895 by Daniel Swarovski, together with financier Armand Kosmann and Franz Weis, and is based in Wattens, in the Tyrol region of Austria. The Wattens site was chosen to take advantage of local hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding that Daniel Swarovski had patented. The company is still associated with that original Tyrolean home.

What does the Swarovski swan logo mean?+

The swan is the mark you'll find on Swarovski products today. The original logo used the edelweiss flower, first adopted in 1899, which was later replaced by an S.A.L. logo, and finally by the swan logo in 1988. All sculptures are marked with a logo, so the swan is a useful authenticity cue on figurines.

Who owns and runs Swarovski now?+

Swarovski remains a family-associated business that has been run by the fifth generation of family members. The company has noted that, for the first time in its history, senior management positions came to be filled by non-family members — Italian-born Michele Molon was appointed interim CEO in October 2021, the first time the company was led by someone unrelated to founder Daniel Swarovski.

What is the Swarovski Crystal Worlds museum?+

Swarovski Kristallwelten, or Crystal Worlds, is the company's crystal-themed museum at its original Wattens site near Innsbruck, Austria. Its most famous feature is a grass-covered head whose mouth is a fountain. It's the place to experience the brand's crystal artistry at its source.

Does Swarovski make anything besides crystal jewellery?+

Yes — the group is far broader than crystal. It includes Swarovski Optik, which makes binoculars, spotting scopes and rifle scopes and traces back to a customised pair of binoculars made by Daniel's son Wilhelm in 1935, and Tyrolit, a maker of grinding and cutting tools founded in 1919. Swarovski launched its first watch collection in 1999, and those watches are Swiss made.

Does Swarovski collaborate with other brands?+

Frequently. Its Atelier Swarovski line has commissioned collections from designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Zaha Hadid, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Iris Apfel, and the company has partnered with Dior at the V&A and with Skims on body jewellery in 2023. In 2024 Swarovski unveiled a Marvel collaboration, expanding its decorative figurines with superhero-themed creations.

What is Swarovski's connection to the Rockefeller Center tree?+

Since 2004, Swarovski has provided the star or snowflake that tops the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City — a piece about 2.7 metres in diameter and weighing around 250 kilograms. Smaller versions are sold as Annual Edition ornaments, a favourite for collectors who want a piece of that holiday tradition.
