Lancôme is a French perfume and cosmetics house founded in 1935 by Guillaume d'Ornano and Armand Petitjean — its name drawn from the forest of Lancosme, and its symbol a single golden rose.

The house launched five fragrances at the 1935 World's Fair in Brussels, then moved into skincare in 1936 with Nutrix, an all-purpose repair cream, before expanding into make-up and cosmetics. Its fragrances have been built with noted perfumers including Jacques Cavallier, Maurice Roucel, Olivier Polge and Francis Kurkdjian.

Acquired by L'Oréal in 1964, Lancôme became part of the group's luxury products division and one of the most prominent names in beauty, with campaigns shot by photographers from Peter Lindbergh to Mario Testino and a long-running partnership with actress Isabella Rossellini.

Lancome shopping FAQ

Is Lancome actually worth the money?+

It depends on what you reach for. Lancome sits in the luxury tier of its parent company L'Oreal, and shoppers tend to feel the value most in the products they repurchase rather than the whole catalogue. The fragrances, skincare and makeup are pitched as a treat-yourself splurge, so the honest answer is to start with one hero item and judge it on your own skin and your own nose before committing further.

Why is Lancome so expensive when L'Oreal owns it?+

Lancome is a subsidiary of L'Oreal, but it lives in the group's luxury products division while L'Oreal's mass lines sit in drugstores. The price gap is mostly positioning, packaging and marketing rather than a different planet of ingredients. If you only care about the formula, some L'Oreal counterparts overlap; if you want the ritual, the bottle and the counter experience, that premium is what you are paying for.

How does Lancome compare to Estee Lauder?+

They are the two grandes dames of department-store beauty and shoppers cross-shop them constantly, especially serum against serum. Lancome leans into a French, rose-scented romance while Estee Lauder reads a touch more clinical and American. Neither is objectively better, so the smart move is to sample the specific products you are weighing rather than buying a brand wholesale.

Which Lancome product should I buy first?+

If you are new to the house, pick the category Lancome is best loved for and you cannot really go wrong: the mascaras and the serums are the most repurchased entry points. Start with a single hero rather than a full routine so you can decide whether the brand earns a permanent shelf spot. A counter or online sample first will save you from an expensive guess.

Where should I buy Lancome to be sure it is genuine?+

Stick to Lancome's official website, department-store counters and authorised retailers. Lancome distributes its products internationally, so legitimate stockists are easy to find, which means there is little reason to gamble on an unknown marketplace seller. Buying through an authorised channel also keeps returns and any guarantee intact.

What does the golden rose on Lancome mean?+

The single golden rose is the house symbol, inspired by the roses growing around the forest of Lancosme in the Brenne region of France, from which the brand took its name. It is a small piece of heritage that ties the modern luxury house back to a very specific corner of the Indre valley. Spotting that rose is part of recognising the real thing.

When and where was Lancome founded?+

Lancome was founded in 1935 in France by Guillaume d'Ornano and his business partner Armand Petitjean, starting life as a fragrance house. It launched its first five fragrances that same year at the World's Fair in Brussels. The skincare era began the following year, in 1936, with Nutrix, billed as an all-purpose repair cream.

What does the name Lancome actually mean?+

The name was inspired by the forest of Lancosme in the region of Brenne, in the Indre valley in the heart of France, and was chosen by Guillaume d'Ornano's wife, Elisabeth. The roses in that area also gave the brand its golden-rose emblem. So the name is rooted in a real French landscape rather than a marketing invention.

Who owns Lancome now?+

Lancome is a subsidiary of L'Oreal, which acquired it in 1964 and placed it within its luxury products division. That ownership gives Lancome the research muscle of one of the world's largest beauty groups while keeping it positioned as a prestige house. It has stayed part of the L'Oreal family ever since.

Why has Lancome stayed so popular for decades?+

A big part of it is consistency and famous faces. Lancome became one of the top advertisers in beauty, shooting campaigns with leading photographers and building long partnerships, most famously with actress Isabella Rossellini, who was its international face for fourteen years and returned for a collaboration more than thirty years after she first represented it. That continuity of glamour, plus a heritage stretching back to 1935, keeps the name front of mind.

Did Lancome have male spokespeople too?+

Yes. In 2006 actor Clive Owen became the first male spokesperson for Lancome, representing the brand's new men's skincare range and the fragrance Hypnose Homme. It marked the house broadening beyond its classic femme-fronted image. The move signalled that Lancome's grooming and fragrance offer was for everyone.

When is the best time to buy Lancome?+

Prestige beauty tends to move on a seasonal rhythm, so the friendliest windows are usually around major gifting periods and brand anniversaries, when sets and bonus offers appear. Signing up to the official mailing list is the simplest way to hear about those first. Beyond timing, buying through an authorised channel matters more than chasing any single date.
