Story & heritage
The Grande Unità scarf holds a special place in the house's story: it was Loro Piana's first finished item, originally crafted from precious cashmere cloth from the Maison's Piedmont factory — a symbolic link between a company that began as a merchant of fabric and its later life as a maker of luxury goods.
From a textile house that started selling cloth by the metre, the Grande Unità was the moment Loro Piana put its name to a finished product. It remains the archetypal house scarf — proof that the brand's entire identity flows from the fibre up.
Materials & craft
The scarf is made in Italy from extra-fine cashmere finished with Loro Piana's exclusive frisson treatment, which lends the cloth a soft sheen and adds luminosity to the colours. It measures roughly 175 x 43 cm with fringing on two sides, and carries the Loro Piana crest and signature embroidered tonally in one corner — the fibre and finish, rather than any pattern, are the craft.
How to choose & style
The Grande Unità is the everyday luxury scarf — substantial enough to wrap, light enough to drape. Camel, grey and navy are the most versatile and let the cashmere's sheen show; the brighter tones make a quiet statement against a coat. It is the kind of accessory whose quality is obvious to the wearer long before it is to anyone else.
