Founded by Achille Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1881, Movado takes its name from the Esperanto for 'movement' — and is known the world over for a single dot at twelve o'clock.

The Ditesheim family built one of the region's first modern factories after the 1870s watchmaking crisis, and within two decades the firm employed dozens, exporting pocket watches internationally before moving to wristwatches and renaming itself Movado. Its defining piece is the Museum Watch, designed in 1947 by American Nathan George Horwitt: a Bauhaus-influenced dial reduced to a solitary dot symbolising the sun at high noon, the first watch dial chosen for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Bought in 1983 by the North American Watch Corporation — founded by Cuban-born Gedalio Grinberg — the company is today Movado Group, whose stable spans Concord, EBEL, Olivia Burton and MVMT, the latter acquired in 2018 for more than $100 million, alongside licensed names from Coach to Calvin Klein.

Movado shopping FAQ

Are Movado watches worth the money?+

It depends on what you want from a watch. Movado occupies an accessible-luxury niche where you are largely paying for an instantly recognisable design and Swiss heritage rather than complicated mechanics. If you love the clean Museum Dial and plan to keep and wear the watch, most owners feel it earns its place; if you want mechanical complexity or investment value, you may be happier elsewhere.

Are Movado watches good quality?+

Generally yes for what they are. Movado is a Swiss-rooted brand offering solid, reliable construction and a famously elegant, minimalist look. The common critique is that the appeal is more about the design than horological depth, so set your expectations around style and dependability rather than collector-grade movements.

Do Movado watches hold their value?+

Not strongly. As an accessible-luxury brand, Movado does not command the resale market the way the top Swiss houses do, so most pieces are better thought of as something to enjoy than as an investment. If long-term value retention is your priority, Movado is not the brand to chase. Buy it because you like wearing it.

What is the Movado Museum Watch and why is it iconic?+

The Museum Watch is Movado's signature design, created by American designer Nathan George Horwitt in 1947. Influenced by the Bauhaus, its dial is stripped to a single dot at 12 o'clock symbolising the sun at high noon. In 1960 Horwitt's dial became the first watch dial selected for the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which is exactly where the name comes from.

What is the single dot on a Movado dial?+

That solitary dot at the 12 o'clock position is Movado's signature motif, meant to represent the sun at high noon. It comes from Nathan George Horwitt's Bauhaus-influenced Museum dial and now appears across many Movado timepieces, making it the easiest way to recognise the brand at a glance.

What is the difference between the Movado Museum and the Movado Bold?+

The Museum line is the pared-back classic, defined by the single-dot dial and quiet minimalism. The Bold collection is the more contemporary, expressive side of the brand, leaning into chunkier cases, metal bracelets and dials that play with colour and texture. Choose Museum for timeless restraint and Bold for a louder, modern look.

What does the name Movado mean?+

Movado is a word from Esperanto, the constructed language, and it means movement, often rendered as "always in motion." Fittingly, the brand has carried the Esperanto theme into model names too, with watches called things like Bela (beautiful), Fiero (pride) and Brila (brilliant).

Where and when was Movado founded?+

Movado was founded in 1881 in the Swiss watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds by Achille Ditesheim. Although it is marketed today as an American luxury watch brand, its origins are firmly Swiss, and it grew quickly into an internationally known maker of pocket and later wristwatches.

Who owns Movado now?+

Movado is the flagship of Movado Group, Inc. The company traces its current ownership to its 1983 purchase by the North American Watch Corporation, founded by Gedalio Grinberg; his son Efraim Grinberg is now chairman and chief executive officer of Movado Group.

What other watch brands does Movado Group make?+

Beyond the Movado name, Movado Group's stable includes Concord, EBEL, Olivia Burton and MVMT, the last of which it acquired in 2018. It also produces watches under license for fashion houses such as Coach, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, so the group reaches well beyond its own label.

Are Movado watches Swiss-made?+

Movado's heritage is Swiss, founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and it has continued to put out Swiss-made collections. The 2015 Movado Motion line, for example, paired fine Swiss-made watches with a connected technology platform. As always, check the specific model you are eyeing, since a large modern brand spans several lines.

Where can I buy a Movado watch safely?+

Stick to Movado's official channel or authorised retailers so you get the genuine article and proper warranty coverage. Because the single-dot design is so recognisable, it is also widely copied, so a trusted seller is the surest way to avoid a fake. Buying authorised matters most if you ever want service down the line.
