Tag Heuer

Don't crack under pressure — the chronograph house of motorsport, the Carrera and the Monaco.

Founded as Heuer in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in St-Imier, Switzerland, the house became TAG Heuer in 1985 — and has spent more than a century perfecting the chronograph.

Edouard Heuer patented his first chronograph in 1882 and an 'oscillating pinion' in 1887 still used by mechanical-chronograph makers today. The brand's racing heart runs deep: the Autavia dashboard timer arrived in 1933, the Carrera — designed by great-grandson Jack Heuer — in 1963, and the square-cased Monaco among its first automatic chronographs in 1969, later made famous by Steve McQueen in Le Mans. In 1962 a Heuer stopwatch became the first Swiss timepiece in space, worn by John Glenn.

Techniques d'Avant Garde took a majority stake in 1985, forming TAG Heuer, and in 1999 LVMH acquired nearly the whole company. Now based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the house carries the slogan 'Don't Crack Under Pressure,' returned as Formula One's official timekeeper from 2025, and counts ambassadors from Steve McQueen to Ayrton Senna and beyond.

Tag Heuer shopping FAQ

Is a TAG Heuer watch worth it?+

TAG Heuer sits at the accessible end of Swiss luxury, which is part of its appeal: you get a genuine in-house chronograph heritage without Patek or Rolex money. Whether it is worth it depends on what you want from a watch, but for a first serious Swiss timepiece the brand's racing pedigree and build quality make it an easy one to live with. Buy the model you actually love wearing rather than treating it purely as an investment.

Why is TAG Heuer so expensive?+

The price reflects Swiss manufacture, the brand's long history with precision chronographs, and the marketing weight behind it as an LVMH house. TAG Heuer is best known for chronographs and stopwatches, and that engineering heritage stretches back to founder Edouard Heuer's 1882 chronograph patent. Within Swiss luxury it is actually one of the more affordable doors in, which is why so many people start their collection here.

Should I buy the TAG Heuer Carrera or the Monaco first?+

The Carrera is the versatile everyday icon: introduced in 1963 and designed by Jack Heuer with a clean, legible dial, it suits almost any wrist and wardrobe. The Monaco is the statement piece, with its unmistakable square case and the romance of being the blue Monaco Steve McQueen wore in the 1971 film Le Mans. If this is your only watch, most people reach for the Carrera; if you want character and already own a daily wearer, the Monaco rewards you.

Who is TAG Heuer's founder and who owns it now?+

The company was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in St-Imier, Switzerland, as Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG. In 1985 Techniques d'Avant Garde bought a majority stake, creating the name TAG Heuer, and in 1999 the French luxury group LVMH acquired nearly the entire company. The name itself combines the initials of "Techniques d'Avant Garde" with the founder's surname.

What is TAG Heuer's signature product?+

TAG Heuer is famous above all for its chronographs, the stopwatch-equipped racing watches that built the name. The lineage runs from Edouard Heuer's 1882 chronograph patent through the dashboard timers of the 1930s to modern icons like the Carrera and Monaco. If you want the most TAG Heuer of TAG Heuers, you want a chronograph.

What does the Carrera name mean?+

The Carrera, launched in 1963, was conceived by Jack Heuer, great-grandson of the founder, and carries the brand's motorsport DNA in its very name. The watch was built around clarity and legibility for drivers, with a stripped-back dial. It remains the line most people picture when they think of a TAG Heuer.

Where are TAG Heuer watches made?+

TAG Heuer is a Swiss watchmaker headquartered in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where it runs a watchmaking factory, alongside a workshop in Cornol. Its slogan, Swiss Avant-Garde Since 1860, nods to both that Swiss manufacture and its founding year. Swiss assembly is a meaningful part of what you pay for.

Why is TAG Heuer so associated with motor racing?+

From the 1950s through the 1970s Heuer watches were popular with racing drivers, and the brand built timing devices for events including Formula One. The Autavia, introduced in 1933, even took its name from AUTos and AVIAtion. That track-and-pit heritage is why so many TAG Heuer dials read like instruments.

Does TAG Heuer make a smartwatch?+

Yes. On 9 November 2015 TAG Heuer launched its first smartwatch, the TAG Heuer Connected, running Google's Android Wear operating system on Intel chips. Connected now sits alongside the brand's mechanical lines, so you can choose between a traditional chronograph and a connected piece. It is a rare example of a heritage Swiss house leaning into the smartwatch era.

What collections does TAG Heuer currently offer?+

The current lineup spans Formula One, Aquaracer, Link, Carrera, Monaco, Connected, Autavia, and the Heuer Heritage line. That range covers racing chronographs, dive watches, dress-leaning pieces, and the Connected smartwatch. It means there is usually a TAG Heuer for whatever role you need a watch to play.

Which celebrities have been linked to TAG Heuer?+

The most enduring association is Steve McQueen, who wore a blue Monaco in the 1971 film Le Mans, a model now nicknamed the "McQueen Monaco." The brand has also worked with figures including racing legend Ayrton Senna among many later ambassadors. That cinematic and motorsport glamour is a big part of the Monaco's mystique.

How should I care for a TAG Heuer chronograph?+

Treat it like the precision instrument it is: keep the crown screwed down before exposure to water, have a mechanical movement serviced periodically by an authorized watchmaker, and wipe the case and bracelet to keep grime out of the pushers. Avoid operating chronograph pushers underwater unless the model is rated for it. With sensible care a well-built Swiss chronograph can run for decades.
