Established by Boyd Lane in Sydney, Oroton revolutionised Australian fashion in the 1950s by replacing the usual evening-bag materials with interwoven metallic mesh, becoming known for its signature mesh evening bags — many of the early pieces made in West Germany. The house remains Sydney-based, with close to 50 stores and concessions across Australia and Malaysia, and added a ready-to-wear line in 2019.
Its modern chapter has been eventful: a public listing as Oroton International in 1987, voluntary administration in 2017, then a return to private hands in 2018 when board member Will Vicars bought the company. A 2018 sales jump followed Meghan Markle wearing an Oroton crossbody on a royal appearance. Sophie Holt was named creative director that year, and Peter Halkett became CEO in 2025.
