Pantene began in Europe in 1945, created by Hoffmann-La Roche of Switzerland, which based the name on panthenol — the pro-vitamin that still defines the brand.

The line crossed to the United States in 1985 when Richardson-Vicks brought it over, and was taken over the same year by Procter & Gamble. Its breakthrough was Pantene Pro-V, a pro-vitamin and 2-in-1 formula first launched in Taiwan, then worldwide, behind a single idea: "Hair So Healthy It Shines."

The strategy worked on a global scale. By 1994, following its launch in 55 countries, Pantene was the world's No. 1 hair care brand with sales over $1 billion, and by 1998 it led in 90 countries. Current global ambassadors include Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez and Kelsea Ballerini.

Pantene shopping FAQ

Is Pantene Pro-V good or bad for your hair?+

Opinions are genuinely split. Pantene Pro-V is built around a pro-vitamin (panthenol) formula that many in cosmetic science regard as well made, and plenty of users see good results, especially on damaged hair. Others with fine, curly, textured or colour-treated hair find certain formulas too heavy or prefer different ingredient profiles. The right answer depends on your hair type, so it is worth matching the specific Pro-V variant to your needs rather than judging the whole brand at once.

Which Pantene product should I start with?+

The natural entry point is Pantene Pro-V, the brand's best-known product and its 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioning formula. The name stands for Pantene Pro-Vitamin, and the line is built on the idea that pro-vitamin formulation supports the health-and-shine promise. From there you can branch into the more targeted Pro-V ranges once you know how your hair responds.

What does Pro-V in Pantene Pro-V mean?+

Pro-V stands for Pantene Pro-Vitamin. The brand's name itself comes from panthenol, the pro-vitamin at the heart of the formula. The Pro-V version combined Pantene's vitamin formula with P&G's 2-in-1 technology, first introduced in Taiwan and then rolled out globally.

Why is Pantene so popular worldwide?+

Pantene's global rise came from a clear positioning: hair health that shows as shine. Research suggested women considered their own hair damaged and read shine as a sign of health, so the brand built its campaigns around the tagline Hair So Healthy It Shines. By 1994, after launching in 55 countries, Pantene was the number-one hair-care brand in the world with sales over 1 billion dollars, and by 1998 it led in 90 countries.

Who owns Pantene?+

Pantene is now owned by Procter & Gamble. P&G took over Richardson Vicks in 1985 partly to compete in the beauty-product market, and Pantene came with it. So although it is an American brand today, it sits inside one of the world's biggest consumer-goods companies.

Where did Pantene originally come from?+

Pantene originated in Europe in 1945, created by Hoffmann-La Roche of Switzerland, which based the name on panthenol. It began its US and global rollout in 1985 when Richardson Vicks purchased it, with P&G taking over later that same year. So the brand has Swiss roots even though it is described today as American.

What was the 'Don't hate me because I'm beautiful' campaign?+

It was the advertising line that made Pantene famous. In 1989, fashion models delivered the line Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, with Kelly Le Brock and Iman among the first television spokeswomen to speak it. The phrase became a pop-culture catchphrase, and was also criticised by feminists, but it cemented Pantene's place in advertising history.

Who are Pantene's brand ambassadors?+

Pantene has long leaned on high-profile faces. Its global ambassadors have included Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez and Kelsea Ballerini, with Maudy Ayunda also named among the current global lineup. Many countries also have their own ambassadors, reflecting how widely the brand markets around the world.

Did Pantene run a hair-donation charity?+

Yes. From June 2006 to December 2018, Pantene and the Entertainment Industry Foundation ran the Pantene Beautiful Lengths charity campaign in the United States, which let people donate hair for women who lost their own due to cancer treatment. It ran for more than a decade before ending in 2018.

Is Pantene a good everyday shampoo for most hair types?+

For a lot of people, yes. Pantene was designed as a mainstream, widely available brand and built its reputation on consistent shine and manageability. That said, those with very fine, curly, textured or colour-treated hair sometimes find specific formulas don't suit them, so choosing the right Pro-V variant for your hair matters more than the brand label itself.
