He inherited a craft. His father Edoardo studied under Luigi Voltan, recognized as the first shoemaker in the Riviera del Brenta, and blended artisanal technique with couture; his mother hand-embroidered shoes in a small room, a tradition still preserved within the Caovilla factory. After studying design in Paris and London around 1950, Rene returned to work with his father and took over the family business in the early 1960s, concentrating on the upscale, jeweled end of the market.
Through the 1970s and 80s he worked with Valentino Garavani, Christian Dior and Chanel, and in 2000, collaborating with Karl Lagerfeld, he began creating jeweled footwear. In 2007 Harrods famously used a live Egyptian cobra to guard a pair of his ruby-, sapphire- and diamond-set sandals. His shoes have been worn by Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum and Rihanna.
