Revel learned high-quality umbrella-making as an apprentice at Poncet Frères before founding his own workshop on 2 October 1851. His son Aimé joined at sixteen, travelled to customers across Europe, created the Veritas brand in 1880 and established Parapluie Revel for the French market in 1900.
The house grew internationally through the second half of the 19th century — into Brazil, Singapore in 1886, French Indo-China and Madagascar — becoming a provider of sun accessories to colonial high society. In 1922 it commissioned poster artist Leonetto Cappiello for an advertisement that became famous in its own right.
