Clothing for feet since Edinburgh, 1981 — a British shoe institution built on self-expression.

Schuh
Re-checked daily
The first schuh — German for shoe, pronounced "shoo" — opened in Edinburgh on 2 November 1981, after founder Sandy Alexander spotted how few fashionable footwear shops existed outside London.

Born on North Bridge and spread across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Aberdeen, schuh weathered the Goldberg years and a 1990 management buy-out to become a fixture of the British high street, trading under the line "Clothing for Feet" and marking thirty years in 2011 with the tagline "30 Years of Self Expression".

Acquired by US footwear group Genesco in June 2011 for £125 million, schuh now runs around 110 stores across the UK and Ireland from its Livingston headquarters, stocking more than eighty brands — Converse, Vans, UGG, Nike, Adidas — alongside its own label.

Schuh shopping FAQ

Is Schuh a good place to buy shoes?+

For most shoppers, yes. Schuh is a long-established British footwear retailer based in Livingston, Scotland, stocking over 80 brands such as Converse, Vans, UGG, Nike and Adidas alongside its own schuh label. Customers tend to praise the in-store staff, the breadth of choice and the quirkier styles you won't find everywhere; experiences with returns and individual products can be more mixed, so it pays to check a specific item before buying.

Is schuh.co.uk legit?+

Yes. Schuh is a genuine, decades-old retailer with a large physical store estate and an established website. As of June 2026 it operates 110 branches across the UK and Ireland, and trades from both its high-street shops and its online store, so ordering from the official site is safe.

What is the Schuh own-brand label like?+

Alongside the big names it stocks, Schuh designs its own-label footwear through an in-house team of shoe designers, aiming to capture current fashion looks and trends. It is the more affordable end of the range and reviews are mixed by style, so treat the own label as fashion-forward value rather than heritage craft, and read reviews on the particular pair you're considering.

Why is Schuh called Schuh if it's not German?+

It's a deliberate bit of misdirection. Schuh is German for shoe, and many people assume the company is German because of it, but it is firmly Scottish. The name came about when founder Sandy Alexander's colleague Mike Doherty saw the word 'schuhe' at the top of an industry magazine; they dropped the 'e' and the brand was born. In its marketing the company pronounces it like the English word 'shoe'.

Where and when did Schuh start?+

The very first Schuh store opened in Edinburgh at 9 North Bridge Arcade on Monday 2 November 1981. Founder Sandy Alexander had noticed a lack of fashionable footwear retailers outside London and chose Edinburgh for the launch, expanding early into Glasgow, Newcastle and Aberdeen.

Who owns Schuh now?+

Schuh has been part of the American footwear corporation Genesco since June 2011, when it was acquired for £125 million. Before that it spent the late 1980s under the Scottish chain Goldberg, regaining independence through a management buy-out in 1990 when Goldberg went into administration.

Does Schuh sell children's shoes?+

Yes. Schuh launched schuh | kids in 2012, its first brand expansion after the Genesco acquisition, starting as small areas inside branches and growing into standalone stores. The concept proved popular enough to win a POPAI interiors award in 2013, and as of June 2026 there are 17 schuh | kids stores among its branches.

Does Schuh have any recycling or trade-in schemes?+

It does. Schuh runs two in-branch recycling initiatives, Sell Your Soles and Too Big For Your Boots, which let customers trade in unwanted, worn footwear for a £5 voucher. In 2024 it also partnered with London reworking label Vintage Threads to turn pre-loved footwear into new wearable pieces, with the collection touring larger branches including Oxford Circus and Manchester's Market Street.

Does Schuh do anything for shoppers with limb differences?+

Yes, and it's one of the more thoughtful things the retailer does. In 2024 Schuh launched single-shoe and mixed-size schemes both in branch and online, so customers with limb differences or disabilities can buy a single shoe or two different sizes, with up to 50% off in those cases. The initiative has since been recognised at footwear industry awards.

Besides shoes, what else does Schuh stock?+

Schuh is predominantly a footwear stockist, but it rounds the range out with shoe-care products and accessories including bags, hats and sunglasses. The own-brand label aspires to reflect current fashion looks, so the store leans toward a trend-led, self-expression feel rather than purely practical footwear.
