Superdry built its name positioning itself as a premium high-street label, fusing vintage American styling with Japanese-inspired graphics and British branding. Supporters point to durable jackets and hoodies that last years; critics counter that you are largely paying for the logo and that the price often outran the quality. The honest read is that value depends on whether the brand's distinctive look is the thing you actually want.

Famously, not much. Despite the signature Japanese lettering, Superdry is a British company that has never expanded into Japan, and the company revealed in 2011 that the Japanese text is produced by a machine translator and is essentially nonsensical. The decorative ideograms were always about appeal and atmosphere rather than literal meaning.

No, it is thoroughly British. Superdry was founded in 2003 by Julian Dunkerton and James Holder alongside businessman Theo Karpathios, growing out of Dunkerton's earlier Cult Clothing Co. The name came after the founders collected packaging in Tokyo, many bearing words beginning with "Super," so the Japanese flavor is a styling choice layered onto a UK label.

The Brad leather jacket. It became a genuine phenomenon after David Beckham was photographed wearing one in 2007, with demand surging so sharply that over 70,000 had sold by 2009 and another 25,000 were on order. The buzz even prompted Primark to launch a very similar jacket, which Superdry challenged, settling out of court.

Its roots are in Cheltenham, England, where Dunkerton's Cult Clothing Co was established back in 1985. The first dedicated Superdry store opened in London's Covent Garden in 2004, and the brand still treats Cheltenham as its hometown even as its fortunes have shifted over the years.

It had a dramatic arc. After a meteoric rise that saw it floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2010 and valued at £1.7 billion in 2018, years of falling sales and internal upheaval followed. The company was delisted from the London Stock Exchange in July 2024, and in 2025 it rebranded to Superdry & Co. The label still exists, just in a much-changed form.

Several big names. In its rise the brand was seen on Leonardo DiCaprio, Pixie Lott and Kate Winslet, with David Beckham an especially notable early fan whose Brad jacket sighting drove a sales boom. Superdry later made actor Idris Elba the face of a premium range, with the CEO describing him as embodying the brand's British, grounded and cool identity.

Jackets and hoodies above all. When founder Dunkerton returned to lead the company he made a point of refocusing on exactly the jackets and hoodies the brand is known for, after a period when it had spread itself thin across items like water bottles, pencil cases, watches and USB sticks. The branded hoodie became almost shorthand for the label.

Yes, some of Superdry's products are vegan, and the brand has publicly leaned on vegan values at points in its history. That said, it has long been associated with leather pieces like the Brad jacket too, so the range spans both, and it is worth checking the specific item if animal-free materials matter to you.

That comparison has been made. Superdry was described by some as a UK version of Abercrombie & Fitch, sharing a reliance on heavily branded casualwear, especially hoodies. Critics warned that this dependence on logo-led basics left it exposed to fast-changing fashion, a concern that proved prescient as the brand later fell out of favor.
