Story & heritage
The Chanel 2.55 was born in February 1955, and the date gives the bag its name. Fashionphile's guide notes that the Reissue arrived in February 2005 for the 50th anniversary, reviving the original 2.55 language rather than the later CC-clasp Classic Flap.
For vintage collectors, the distinction matters: a 2.55/Reissue speaks through the rectangular Mademoiselle lock, all-chain strap and diamond quilting rather than obvious logo hardware.
Materials & craft
The core construction cues are aged calfskin or lambskin, diamond quilting, a double flap, chain strap and Mademoiselle turn-lock. Resale listings should be checked for corner wear, chain oxidation, lining condition and serial/date authenticity.
How to choose & style
A black 225 or 226 is the easiest vintage investment size: small enough for evening, practical enough with jeans. Metallic, tweed and charm editions are stronger collector statements and need quieter clothes around them.
