Story & heritage
Hermès says Robert Dumas created the ladies' bag with straps in the 1930s, and that the Kelly legend formed when Grace Kelly was photographed holding the bag over her stomach. The house's own heritage page frames that photograph as the moment the Kelly was born.
In vintage terms, the Kelly is a condition-and-provenance object. Year stamp, leather, hardware, size, sellier versus retourne construction and included strap or clochette all change the story.
Materials & craft
The Kelly is recognised by its trapezoid structure, cut-out flap, straps, turn-lock, padlock and clochette. Sellier versions feel crisp and architectural; retourne versions soften with use and often suit relaxed vintage dressing.
How to choose & style
Let the bag set the register: a 25cm Sellier sharpens tailoring, while a larger Retourne can make denim and knitwear look collected instead of casual. Neutrals are safest; saturated vintage colours are the collector move.
