Athleta is a football-focused sports brand created in São Paulo in 1935 — and the brand that supplied Brazil's national team its first yellow and green shirts after the white-and-blue was abandoned following the 1950 Maracanazo.

Founded in the Belém district of São Paulo by Santa Isabel Textile Manufacturing under Antônio de Oliveira, Athleta began making socks and shirts for amateur sport. It became shirt supplier to the Brazil national team in 1954 — sharing duties with Umbro from 1958 — and made the Seleção's jerseys for the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, when production was practically artisanal: sketches drawn by hand and numbers embroidered in dots. The brand also kitted clubs including Santos from the 1950s into the 1980s.

After decades dormant, the brand reappeared in September 2009 under the Japanese group The Brand's Company, which now stewards its football heritage.

Athleta shopping FAQ

Is Athleta worth it compared to Lululemon?+

For a lot of shoppers, Athleta lands in the sweet spot between performance and price. The fabrics and construction read as genuinely premium, yet pieces typically sit below comparable Lululemon styles, and the brand leans hard on versatility so leggings move easily from a workout to the rest of your day. If you want studio-ready performance without the very top-tier ticket, Athleta is an easy one to try.

Is Athleta good quality?+

Most wearers rate the quality highly. Athleta was founded in 1998 as a women's athletic apparel company built around combining true performance with stylish, everyday wear, and that performance-plus-polish brief still defines the line. The result is gear meant to hold its shape and finish through repeated washing and training rather than feel disposable.

Why is Athleta more expensive than budget activewear?+

Athleta positions itself as a premium performance label rather than fast fashion, and the price reflects the materials, the design work, and a sustainability commitment. In 2018 the brand became a certified B Corporation, a standard that weighs environmental and social practice, which is part of why pieces are built and sourced the way they are. You are paying for longevity and ethics as much as for the logo.

Who owns Athleta?+

Athleta is owned by Gap Inc., which acquired the brand in 2008 for roughly $150 million. It began life as an independent women's athletic apparel company and now sits within Gap's portfolio, where it has grown into one of the group's better-known performance names.

Is Athleta really focused on women?+

Yes. Athleta was founded specifically as a women's athletic apparel company, and that focus has shaped everything from fit to messaging. The brand is led by global brand president and chief executive Maggie Gauger, who previously ran Nike's North America women's business, so the women-first design intent runs right through the leadership.

Can I shop Athleta in a physical store?+

You can. After Gap acquired the brand, Athleta expanded beyond catalog and online into brick-and-mortar retail, opening its first physical store in Mill Valley, California, in 2011. The store footprint has grown from there, so in many areas you can try styles on in person rather than guessing at fit online.

How does Athleta compare to Fabletics?+

The two appeal to slightly different shoppers. Fabletics leans toward trend-driven, budget-friendly activewear through a subscription model, while Athleta sits as a premium performance brand with a strong sustainability story behind its certified B Corp status. If you prioritise durability, polish, and ethical sourcing over rotating low prices, Athleta is usually the better fit.

Does Athleta make pieces I can wear outside the gym?+

That versatility is central to the brand. From its 1998 founding, Athleta set out to merge real performance clothing with stylish, everyday wear, so the line is designed to carry you from a workout into errands or a casual day without looking like gym kit. Many shoppers buy Athleta precisely because the pieces pull double duty.

Is Athleta a sustainable brand?+

Sustainability is a defining part of Athleta's identity. The company committed to higher environmental standards by becoming a certified B Corporation in 2018, a credential that holds a business to measurable environmental and social benchmarks. For shoppers who want activewear that aligns with those values, it is one of the more credible names in the category.

How do I choose my size and fit at Athleta?+

Because Athleta designs around real performance and everyday wear, fit varies by activity, so it helps to think about how you will use a piece first. Check the size guide for each style, lean toward your training intentions, and take advantage of in-store try-on at locations like the original Mill Valley shop if you are between sizes. When in doubt, the brand's customer-friendly approach makes adjusting an order straightforward.
