Black Diamond's roots reach back to the late 1950s, when climber Yvon Chouinard hand-forged pitons and sold them from the trunk of his car in Yosemite Valley.

Chouinard Equipment was the seed; after it entered bankruptcy in 1989, a group of former employees led by Peter Metcalf bought the assets and founded Black Diamond on 1 December that year, soon moving to Salt Lake City to sit closer to the Wasatch Mountains.

The Utah-based company designs gear for climbing, skiing and mountain sports — carabiners, harnesses, ice tools, headlamps and tents — including the spring-loaded Camalot and Magnetron magnetic-gate carabiners. It is owned by Clarus Corporation.

Black Diamond shopping FAQ

Is Black Diamond climbing gear worth it?+

For most climbers the answer is yes. Black Diamond has spent decades building safety equipment that people quite literally trust their lives to, and that reputation shows in the engineering of its harnesses, carabiners and belay devices. If you climb regularly, the durability and considered design usually justify the spend over budget alternatives.

Is Black Diamond gear actually good quality?+

Black Diamond designs and manufactures equipment specifically for climbing, skiing and mountain sports, and it is one of the most established names in the category. The brand is best known for thoughtful, purpose-built hardware like its Camalot camming devices and Magnetron auto-locking carabiners. As with any safety-equipment maker, it has issued product recalls over the years, so registering your gear and watching for notices is sensible.

What Black Diamond product should I buy first?+

A headlamp or a harness is usually the easiest entry point. The Spot headlamp is a long-running favourite for its light weight and bright output, while a Momentum or Solution harness covers most gym and sport climbing. From there you can build up to carabiners, quickdraws and belay devices as your climbing grows.

How does Black Diamond compare to Petzl?+

Both are trusted, reliable names in climbing safety gear, so it often comes down to feel rather than quality. Climbers tend to reach for Black Diamond when they want streamlined, simple-to-use hardware, and toward Petzl when they want maximum versatility. The best approach is to handle both brands' harnesses and devices in a shop and pick what fits your body and your discipline.

What is the Black Diamond Camalot?+

The Camalot is Black Diamond's spring-loaded camming device, used as active protection that wedges into cracks in the rock. It is one of the brand's signature pieces of climbing protection and a staple of trad racks. Black Diamond also makes its distinctive Magnetron carabiners, which use magnets in the gate plus a steel insert in the nose for added security.

Where is Black Diamond gear made?+

Black Diamond is an American company based in Utah, with manufacturing in the Salt Lake City area that it expanded in 2015. It also operates a manufacturing and distribution facility in Zhuhai, China, established in 2006, and a global office in Innsbruck, Austria. In 2024 several of its product lines received third-party certification verifying their use of recycled aluminium.

Who founded Black Diamond and when?+

Black Diamond traces back to climber Yvon Chouinard, who began hand-forging pitons in the late 1950s and sold them from the trunk of his car in Yosemite Valley, leading to Chouinard Equipment Ltd. After that company entered bankruptcy, Black Diamond was founded on December 1, 1989, when former employees led by Peter Metcalf purchased its assets. Metcalf then moved the company to the Salt Lake City area in 1991 to be closer to the Wasatch Mountains.

Who owns Black Diamond now?+

Black Diamond Equipment is owned by Clarus Corporation, which acquired it in May 2010 and also owns Pieps and ClimbOn! Skincare. The parent company trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the ticker CLAR. That corporate backing sits behind the gear, but the brand still designs and builds around its climbing and mountain roots.

Does Black Diamond make ski and avalanche gear too?+

Yes. Alongside its climbing hardware, Black Diamond produces skiing and avalanche safety equipment, reflecting its base in Utah's mountains. Its broader mountain range also includes tents and shelters, lighting, trekking poles and backpacks. So it is a genuine all-round mountain-sports outfitter rather than a climbing-only brand.

Has Black Diamond acquired other gear companies?+

Over the years Black Diamond has folded several gear makers into its line, including Bibler tents, Franklin climbing products and Ascension climbing skins in the late 1990s. It also bought Gregory Mountain Products, a backpack maker, in 2010, before selling it to Samsonite in 2014. That history of absorbing specialists helps explain the breadth of its current range.

Where can I buy genuine Black Diamond gear?+

Stick to Black Diamond's own channels and established outdoor and climbing retailers, since this is life-safety equipment where authenticity matters. Buying through recognised stockists also makes it far easier to track recalls and warranty claims, which is worth doing given that safety-equipment brands periodically issue recalls. Avoid unbranded third-party marketplaces for hardware like carabiners and belay devices.

When is the best time to buy Black Diamond gear?+

Seasonal transitions are usually your friend, as outdoor retailers often refresh ranges between summer and winter and move on previous-season stock. Headlamps, packs and apparel tend to see the most movement, while core safety hardware is bought when you need it rather than when it is cheapest. Whenever you buy, prioritise the right fit and a trusted seller over a small saving.
