La Sportiva

From boots for farmers and lumberjacks to the shoes that climbed El Capitan — Italian footwear for the mountains.

La Sportiva
Re-checked daily
Founded in Italy in 1928 by Narciso Delladio, La Sportiva began making boots and clogs for farmers and lumberjacks — and grew into a name built for the mountains.

Delladio supplied custom mountaineering boots to Italy's soldiers in the Second World War, turned to ski boots in the 1950s, and first introduced the La Sportiva name there. Today the brand makes footwear for mountaineering, climbing, running, hiking and skiing, distributed across Europe and North America, with its first US store opening in Boulder, Colorado in 2024.

The house sponsors athletes across mountain running, rock, ice and alpine climbing and skiing. Its collaboration with Tommy Caldwell produced the TC Pro climbing shoe — the one Caldwell wore on the Dawn Wall, and Alex Honnold on his free solo of El Capitan.

La Sportiva shopping FAQ

Should I get the La Sportiva Solution or the TC Pro first?+

It depends on the climbing in front of you. The Solution is the aggressively downturned, banana-shaped shoe built to claw into overhanging holds, so it suits steep sport and bouldering. The TC Pro is flatter and edges precisely on vertical and slabby rock, which is why it became a trad and big-wall favourite. If you mostly climb in the gym or on overhangs, start with the Solution; if you crave long days on cracks and faces, the TC Pro is the smarter first buy.

Are La Sportiva climbing shoes worth the money?+

For most climbers, yes. The reputation is built on rubber that bites, lasts that suit real climbing styles, and a build that survives resoling for several seasons. They are not the cheapest shoes on the wall, but the per-climb cost over their lifespan tends to feel fair. The honest caveat is fit: a La Sportiva shoe only earns its price if the shape matches your foot, so try before you commit where you can.

Which La Sportiva shoe is best for a beginner?+

Look toward the gentler end of the range rather than the downturned performance models. A flatter, more comfortable last lets a new climber stand on their feet all session without their toes screaming, which is how you actually build technique. Save the Solution and other aggressive shapes for when your footwork and tolerance have caught up. A neutral first shoe you can wear for hours beats a high-performance one you take off after two routes.

What is the story behind La Sportiva's TC Pro?+

The TC Pro was developed in collaboration with American climber Tommy Caldwell, and the shoe carries his initials. It is the model Caldwell wore on his ascent of the Dawn Wall, and the one Alex Honnold wore for his free solo of El Capitan. That pedigree on some of the hardest and most famous climbing in the world is a big part of why the TC Pro is treated as a benchmark for hard vertical routes.

Where are La Sportiva shoes made and who founded the company?+

La Sportiva is an Italian footwear company founded in 1928 by Narciso Delladio. He began by making boots and clogs for farmers and lumberjacks, then produced custom mountaineering boots for Italian soldiers during World War II. The roots are firmly in the Italian mountains, and that alpine heritage still runs through the brand's identity today.

How did La Sportiva grow from boots into a climbing brand?+

The early business was practical mountain footwear, but in the 1950s Delladio moved into ski boots and first introduced the La Sportiva brand name. From there the company expanded into footwear for mountaineering, climbing and skiing, the three pillars it is still known for. It is a story of a workwear bootmaker steadily following climbers up the mountain.

What kinds of footwear does La Sportiva actually make?+

La Sportiva is a footwear brand for mountaineering, climbing and skiing, with a product line that stretches across outdoor sports including climbing, running, hiking and skiing. The catalogue includes specialised equipment for a wide range of terrain, right up to technical rock faces. In short, if the ground tilts upward, there is usually a La Sportiva shoe designed for it.

Does La Sportiva support real climbers and athletes?+

Yes, sponsorship of athletes is central to how the brand develops its products. La Sportiva backs competitors across mountain running, rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing and skiing, and that feedback loop with elite climbers feeds straight back into the shoes. The TC Pro, built with Tommy Caldwell, is the clearest example of an athlete partnership becoming a flagship product.

Does La Sportiva have a presence in North America?+

It does. La Sportiva products are distributed across Europe and North America, and the brand opened its first store in Boulder, Colorado in January 2024. Boulder is one of the great climbing towns in the United States, so it is a fitting home for the company's first North American shop.

How should I care for my La Sportiva shoes to make them last?+

Treat them as the precision tools they are. Keep them out of direct sun and away from car-boot heat, let them air out rather than sealing sweat into the rubber, and avoid walking the approach in your climbing shoes so the soft sole is saved for the rock. When the toe rubber wears thin, resole rather than replace; a good cobbler can give a worn pair several more seasons, which is a large part of their long-term value.
