Padded Cassette

The Intrecciato weave blown up to pillow scale — the bag that made Bottega's signature impossible to miss.

Story & heritage

The Cassette debuted in Daniel Lee's first official runway show for Bottega Veneta, Fall/Winter 2019. Its move was simple and radical: take the house's century-defining Intrecciato weave and exaggerate it, enlarging the leather strips into oversized, padded cushions. The result — the Padded Cassette — turned a discreet craft signature into a bold, instantly legible graphic.

The padded Maxi Intreccio became one of the most-photographed bags of its era and a social-media fixture, spawning a Chain Cassette with a heavy gold-tone chain and inspiring the padded Lido sandals that echoed its quilted look. It remains shorthand for the Daniel Lee moment that repositioned Bottega Veneta at the centre of fashion conversation.

Materials & craft

The Padded Cassette is woven in the house's Maxi Intreccio — the Intrecciato technique scaled up so each leather strip is broad and cushioned with padding, giving the bag its pillow-soft, three-dimensional surface. It is cut from nappa lambskin, structured into a rectangular crossbody with a fold-over flap. The triangle hardware on the strap nods to the house's geometric vocabulary; the chain version swaps the leather strap for a chunky gold-tone chain.

How to choose & style

The Cassette is a statement crossbody — its padded weave does the talking, so it pairs best with clean, simple tailoring. Almond and caramel read warm and heritage-adjacent; black and slate keep it graphic and urban. The Chain Cassette lifts toward evening, while the leather-strap version is the everyday read. Worn close to the body on a short strap, the bag's cushioned geometry sits like a piece of soft sculpture.
