Chanel 19 Bag

The last bag conceived by Karl Lagerfeld with Virginie Viard — oversized quilting and a tri-tone chain.

Story & heritage

The Chanel 19 debuted in the Autumn–Winter 2019 collection, named for that year. It was the last bag conceived by Karl Lagerfeld in collaboration with Virginie Viard, who became creative director after Lagerfeld's death in February 2019 — making the 19 a hinge between two eras of the house.

It is, in effect, a re-imagining of the 2.55 and the 11.12 for a softer moment: deliberately oversized diamond quilting, a relaxed and lightly slouchy body, and a chain that combines three finishes at once. Where the Classic Flap is precise, the 19 is easy and modern.

Materials & craft

The 19 is made in soft, lightweight lambskin (and seasonal materials such as tweed and denim) with an exaggerated, puffy oversized quilt. Its hallmark is the chain: a mixed strap blending gold-tone, silver-tone and ruthenium links interlaced with leather. The CC clasp is itself formed from entwined chain rather than a solid plaque, echoing the strap. The unstructured body gives it a markedly more casual carry than its predecessors.

How to choose & style

The Small/standard size is the most versatile and the one most often carried; the Large becomes a roomy everyday or travel bag, and the Maxi reads as a soft tote. Because the chain already mixes three metals, the 19 pairs effortlessly with both gold and silver jewellery. Black is the safe everyday choice, but the bag was built for colour — its puffy quilting carries bright lambskins beautifully.
