Classic Flap Bag (11.12)
The most recognisable bag in fashion — the 2.55 reborn under Karl Lagerfeld with the interlocking CC clasp.
Story & heritage
The Classic Flap descends directly from the 2.55, the quilted-leather shoulder bag Gabrielle Chanel presented in February 1955. When Karl Lagerfeld took creative control of the house in 1983, he reworked the original Mademoiselle lock into the now-ubiquitous interlocking double-C turnlock — the version collectors call the 11.12, after its style reference. It retained the essence of the 1955 design while adding a modern signal of the house.
Its codes are drawn from Chanel's own history: the diamond quilting echoes the matelassé that recurs across the house, and the chain-threaded-with-leather strap freed a woman's hands the way the original 2.55 strap was designed to. The bag has become the default reference point against which every other flap is measured.
Materials & craft
The Classic Flap is built in two signature leathers: grained caviar calfskin, prized for its hard-wearing pebbled surface, and smooth lambskin, softer and more delicate. The body carries the diamond quilting throughout; inside is the burgundy lining and the famous back slip pocket. The strap interlaces a metal chain with a leather strip, in gold- or silver-tone, and the CC turnlock is the closure and the emblem at once.
How to choose & style
The Medium/Large is the canonical size — it crosses from day to evening and reads as the bag people picture when they think 'Chanel'. The Jumbo carries more for travel and busy days; the Mini is the going-out option. Black caviar with gold hardware is the most enduring combination and the easiest to wear; lambskin gives a dressier, softer look but asks for more care. Worn on the shoulder or doubled short across the body, it anchors tailoring and eveningwear alike.
