Gabrielle Bag

A two-tone, two-strap hobo named after the founder herself — unisex, slouchy and worn many ways.

Story & heritage

Karl Lagerfeld introduced the Gabrielle in 2017, naming it directly after Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. Conceived as a deliberately versatile, unisex hobo, it broke from the structured-flap tradition: a curved, gently slouchy body sitting on a rigid contrast base, suspended from a chain that can be worn long as a crossbody, doubled on the shoulder, or shortened by hand.

Promoted with a high-profile campaign, the Gabrielle became one of the house's defining bags of the late 2010s before being discontinued in the early 2020s — which has only sharpened its standing as a collector's piece.

Materials & craft

The Gabrielle is built in aged calfskin (often quilted in a diamond or chevron pattern on the upper body) over a smooth, structured contrast base — typically a black base under a coloured or two-tone top. Its chain mixes gold-tone and silver-tone links threaded with leather, attached at two points so the bag can be carried in several ways. A small CC charm hangs from the strap.

How to choose & style

The Small is the everyday pick and the Hobo the roomier, softer option. The bag's two-tone construction means it already carries contrast built in, so it pairs cleanly with neutral dressing. Worn crossbody it reads casual and modern; doubled on the shoulder it tightens into a more structured shape. Aged neutrals (beige, black) are the most wearable; the jewel tones make the most of the curved silhouette.
