The name was the whole idea: the company advertised by letting "cover girls" — the models, actresses and singers on the front of women's magazines — wear its products. That first medicated makeup used Noxzema's camphor, menthol and eucalyptus, and the brand's fresh, wholesome look, set by early faces like Cybill Shepherd, defined the girl-next-door image CoverGirl became known for. In 1997 it introduced its famous slogan, "Easy, breezy, beautiful."
CoverGirl made history along the way — in 1992 it became the first major cosmetic company to sign a Black model, Lana Ogilvie, to an exclusive contract, and in 2016 named YouTuber James Charles its first male spokesperson. It was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1989 and by Coty, Inc. in 2016, and rebranded in 2017 around "I Am What I Make Up."
