Ko started the brand at 25 with a $250,000 loan from her parents, launching with six eyeliners and twelve lip liners priced at $1.99 — the first run sold out in under 30 days, and the jumbo eye pencils brought in $2 million within the first year. The pitch was simple and durable: "department store beauty" at "drugstore prices," first to professionals, then to the mass market.
In 2014 Ko sold NYX to L'Oréal for $500 million; the brand relaunched as NYX Professional Makeup in 2016 and opened standalone stores across Europe, North America and beyond. PETA recognises it as cruelty-free, and it carries a wide range of vegan-friendly products, sold in more than 70 countries.
