Dansko was founded in 1990 by husband-and-wife team Peter Kjellerup and Mandy Cabot. Yes, and it is a real part of the company's identity. Dansko launched an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 2005, and by 2012 it had bought back all previously issued stock to operate as a completely employee-owned company. It was also recognized on B Corp's Best for Workers list in 2014.

Many Dansko styles carry the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association, which is uncommon for fashion-led footwear.
