Story & heritage

The 1460 is Dr. Martens’ original eight-eye boot, introduced on 1 April 1960 and named after that date. It began as practical footwear before becoming a cultural marker for generations of wearers.

Its familiar codes are all visible at once: yellow welt stitching, a scripted heel loop, grooved sole edges and the rounded boot shape that the brand still treats as its foundation.

Materials & craft

The official Smooth Leather version uses a 100% leather upper with a PVC sole and a Goodyear-welted build, heat-sealed and reinforced with the signature welt stitch.

Smooth leather is described by Dr. Martens as durable and stiff at first, able to be polished to shine or worn in with scuffs.

How to choose & style

Choose the 1460 when you want the clearest Doc Martens signal: straight-leg denim, a black trouser or a soft dress all sharpen around the boot.

Black Smooth is the most universal pair; Cherry Red and Made in England versions read more archival.
