Founder Tsunemi Yonehachi was among the first merchants to bring vintage American jeans to Japan in the postwar era, setting off a national obsession with denim. In 1961 Edwin debuted the first jeans made in Japan.
By the 1970s the brand was a denim pioneer, experimenting in its Edwin Wash House with techniques that shaped washing worldwide — ONE WASH, a pre-wash to eliminate shrinkage, and OLD WASH, a precursor to stone wash for a lived-in look. The 503 model, first sold in 1997, remains its most popular line; Brad Pitt has served as an official spokesman.
