Eileen Fisher (born 1951) founded her namesake American womenswear company in 1984 with $350 in startup money, after working in New York as an interior designer and graphic artist.
An Illinois-raised designer who paid her own way through the University of Illinois waiting tables, Fisher took her first order at a New York design show for $3,000, followed three months later by $40,000 more, and opened her first retail store on East 9th Street in Manhattan in 1986. The privately held company grew past $300 million in estimated revenue by 2015, with over 1,200 employees and stores across the United States, Canada and London.
To reduce fabric and fiber waste, the company built a recycling program: customers return gently used Eileen Fisher clothing for a $5 gift certificate, and the cleaned garments are resold — with the income funding business grants and leadership programs for women.
