Story & heritage
G-SHOCK begins with the square DW-5000C launched in April 1983 after Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe pursued a watch that could resist shock, vibration and hard use. The current DW5000R-1A is officially described as re-creating the original design of that first G-SHOCK, making it the cleanest bridge from the 1983 milestone to today.
The model keeps the square face language, brick-pattern display mood and blunt protective bezel that define the origin story rather than treating heritage as a decorative afterthought.
Materials & craft
The historical G-SHOCK concept centered on shock resistance, water resistance and a protected quartz module; the DW5000R-1A updates that idea as a modern digital model with 20-bar water resistance, resin protection and the familiar square control layout.
Choose it for the screw-back origin feel and for a design that is intentionally closer to archival G-SHOCK than to a fashion collaboration.
How to choose & style
Wear the DW5000R-1A as the purist square: black tees, denim, military liners, nylon shells and workwear all let the historic face do the talking. It is the one to pick when the appeal is provenance rather than extra sensors.
