Guy Harvey

A marine biologist's brush turned into a way of life — sealife art that became shirts, prints and ocean conservation.

Re-checked daily
Guy Harvey is a Jamaican marine-wildlife artist and conservationist whose paintings of sportfish — marlin above all — became one of the most recognisable signatures in ocean lifestyle, reproduced on prints, T-shirts and more.

Harvey studied Marine Biology at Aberdeen University and earned a PhD in Fisheries Management from the University of the West Indies. A 1985 series of 44 pen-and-ink drawings of Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea' drew enough acclaim that he began painting full-time, and by 1988 was licensing custom artwork across a range of products.

His work doubles as advocacy: in 1999 he founded the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, followed by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation in 2008, both funding marine science and conservation. His honours include induction into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame.

Guy Harvey shopping FAQ

Are Guy Harvey shirts worth it?+

If you love the ocean look, Guy Harvey is a natural fit, because the whole brand is built on the artist's own marine-wildlife paintings reproduced onto apparel. You are not just buying a shirt, you are wearing his realistic art of warm-water sport fish like marlin. For anglers and waterman-lifestyle fans, that distinctive artwork is exactly what makes it worth the buy.

Are Guy Harvey fishing shirts good quality?+

Guy Harvey apparel is aimed squarely at people who spend time on the water, so look for the lightweight, sun-friendly performance pieces if you fish all day. Just as important to many buyers is what the brand stands for: Guy Harvey has long donated portions of his proceeds to marine-conservation causes, so a purchase ties back to the ocean it depicts. Buy it for the art-led design and the cause as much as the fabric.

How does Guy Harvey compare to other fishing apparel?+

The big difference is the art. Where many performance-fishing labels lead with fabric tech, Guy Harvey leads with the founder's signature marine paintings of marlin and other sport fish, realistically rendered in their natural settings. So the comparison often comes down to whether you want the recognisable ocean-art identity, plus the conservation backing, that no purely technical brand can replicate.

Who is Guy Harvey, the person behind the brand?+

Guy Harvey, born 16 September 1955, is a Jamaican marine-wildlife artist and conservationist. His depictions of sealife, especially sportfish such as marlin, became popular with sportfishermen and have been reproduced on prints, posters, T-shirts, jewellery, clothing and more. He is also a very vocal advocate for marine conservation.

What is the signature Guy Harvey design?+

Marlin and other warm-water sport fish. Harvey's artistic style is to realistically depict warm-water marine sport fish in dynamic poses in their natural settings, working in watercolour, oil and acrylic. Those marlin-led ocean scenes are the visual signature you see across the shirts, hats and other gear.

How did Guy Harvey become an apparel brand?+

It grew out of his art. In 1985 Harvey depicted Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea in a series of 44 original pen-and-ink drawings shown in Jamaica, and the positive response led him to paint full-time. By 1988 he was providing custom artwork for a variety of products, and his work was eventually licensed for merchandise such as T-shirts, aloha-style shirts, belts and hats.

Does buying Guy Harvey support ocean conservation?+

Yes, conservation is core to the brand's identity. Harvey has donated portions of his proceeds from the sale of his artwork and merchandise to various causes dedicated to protecting the marine environment, and he is an advocate for responsible, sustainable fishing. In 1999 he founded the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

What is the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation?+

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation was founded by Harvey in 2008 to help ensure future generations benefit from a naturally balanced ocean ecosystem where fish and other marine wildlife flourish. It funds scientific research and educational initiatives, and helps support the Guy Harvey Research Institute. It is a major reason the brand is so closely linked with conservation.

Where is Guy Harvey from?+

Harvey grew up in Jamaica and is a 10th-generation Jamaican of English heritage, his family having immigrated there in 1664. He studied Marine Biology at Aberdeen University in Scotland and later earned a PhD in Fisheries Management from the University of the West Indies. In 1999 he moved his family from Jamaica to the Cayman Islands.

Is Guy Harvey a serious marine scientist or just an artist?+

Both, genuinely. Beyond his art, Harvey graduated with highest honours in Marine Biology in 1977 and holds a PhD in Fisheries Management. His conservation work led to his induction into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame, so the ocean credibility behind the brand is real, not just decorative.

What kinds of products carry Guy Harvey artwork?+

A wide range. His art is routinely reproduced on canvas, fine-art prints, posters, magazines and books, and licensed for merchandising including T-shirts, aloha-style shirts, belts and hats. So whether you want wall art or wearable pieces, the same marine-wildlife imagery runs through the whole collection.
