Drakkar Eau de Toilette
The pre-Noir Drakkar that established the name before the black bottle became legend.
Story & heritage
Released in 1972, Drakkar is the original fragrance behind the name that Drakkar Noir would make globally famous ten years later. The Guy Laroche Wikipedia page lists it in the brand's fragrance chronology, and the Drakkar Noir page identifies Noir as its successor scent.
Its vintage bottle, pale yellow juice and patterned carton feel gentler and more 1970s than the matte-black 1982 successor.
Materials & craft
Basenotes lists bergamot, juniper, lavender, mandarin and lemon at the head; pine, cedarwood, jasmine and spices in the heart; and amber, moss and musk at the base. Fragrantica records a broader citrus-aromatic pyramid including lemon verbena, clary sage, angelica, coriander, basil, rosemary, oakmoss, tolu balsam and patchouli.
How to choose & style
Original Drakkar is best understood as archive fragrance: softer tailoring, suede, corduroy, tan leather and vintage knitwear suit its warmer 1970s register.
