Lakai has carried a deep team over the years, including names like Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Guy Mariano, Marc Johnson, Eric Koston, Lucas Puig and Brandon Biebel, with even Tony Hawk appearing in the brand's history. Many of these riders had signature models, so a Lakai shoe often traces directly back to a specific skater.

Ownership has changed hands several times. Lakai moved through HUF's Renegade Brands and was sold to TSI Holdings in 2017 as part of the HUF Worldwide sale, then was acquired by Inversal in October 2024. Shortly after that 2024 acquisition, founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard, along with the skate team, were released from the brand.

Plenty of people wear Lakai purely for the look, and its clean suede silhouettes translate well to street style. Just remember the shoes were engineered for skating first, so the suede grip panels and board-feel soles are the priority. If you want a low-key, skate-rooted everyday sneaker, that heritage is part of the appeal.

A practical approach is to buy ahead of a heavy skate stretch, such as the start of summer, so you're not breaking in fresh shoes mid-session. Seasonal turnover at skate shops also tends to move older colorways, so checking end-of-season stock is a reliable way to find a model you like.
