Franco Moschino trained at Milan's Accademia di Belle Arti and sketched for Versace before launching "Moschino Couture!" His wit was the whole point — a suit bearing a Roy Lichtenstein pop-art piece, a T-shirt tuned to "Channel No. 5" that drew a lawsuit from Chanel. After his death in 1994, Rossella Jardini carried the eccentric spirit forward, dressing Madonna and Lady Gaga for their tours.
Under Jeremy Scott (2013–2023) the house leaned fully into spectacle, from a smiley-face Katy Perry tour look to a chandelier gown for the 2019 Camp-themed Met Gala. Part of Italian luxury group Aeffe S.p.A., Moschino's creative director is now Adrian Appiolaza, appointed in 2024.

You are paying for an Italian luxury house with genuine craft and, above all, ideas. Moschino's mainline ready-to-wear, handbags and accessories use quality materials and are positioned as luxury, but the real draw is the over-the-top, witty design the brand has been famous for since Franco Moschino founded it in 1983. The novelty and runway theatre command a premium even though the construction is solid in its own right.
If you love playful, surreal fashion, Moschino is one of the more rewarding luxury buys. It sits in the middle-luxury tier rather than the ultra-premium heritage bracket, so you get high design impact and good quality without the very top prices. Buy it for the wit and the statement; if you mainly want quiet, classic craftsmanship, a different house may suit you better.
They are tiers of the same house. The mainline Moschino is the top runway collection; Boutique Moschino was established in 2014 under Jeremy Scott as a women's line at a price point around 40 percent lower than the mainline. Love Moschino is the more casual, accessible diffusion line, which took its name with the F/W 2008–2009 pre-collection when Moschino Jeans was rebranded.
Both are bold Italian houses founded in Milan within a few years of each other, but the mood is different. Versace is glamorous, sexy and powerful, built around its Medusa branding, while Moschino is playful, campy and satirical, designed to make you smile. If you want high-voltage glamour go Versace; if you want fashion with a sense of humour, Moschino is your house.
Moschino is known for over-the-top, campy designs that often poke fun at fashion itself. Franco Moschino built that reputation early with stunts like a suit featuring a Roy Lichtenstein pop-art piece and a t-shirt printed with a TV tuned to "Channel No. 5" — a Chanel reference that prompted a lawsuit. That irreverence remains the brand's signature today.
Moschino was founded in 1983 in Milan by Franco Moschino, who was born in 1950 in Abbiategrasso. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, then worked as a design sketcher at Versace from 1971 to 1977 before creating his own "Moschino Couture!" By the late 1980s the brand's European popularity had spread to the United States, where it accounted for 15 to 20 percent of business.
Moschino's current creative director is Adrian Appiolaza, appointed in January 2024. Before joining he spent ten years at Loewe as womenswear design director under Jonathan Anderson, and he is a Central Saint Martins graduate who has also worked at Chloé, Alexander McQueen and Miu Miu. He oversees the women's and men's lines as well as accessories.
Jeremy Scott was creative director from 2013 to 2023, debuting his first collection in Fall 2014, and he leaned hard into the brand's pop-culture playfulness. During his tenure Moschino designed a smiley-face outfit for Katy Perry's 2014 world tour and a crystal one-piece for Madonna in 2015, collaborated with H&M in 2018, and even produced a Sims 4 collection with EA Games in 2019. He announced his exit in March 2023.
Yes, and several are part of its legend. The house created outfits for Madonna and Lady Gaga's world tours under Rossella Jardini, and at the 2019 Met Gala — themed Camp: Notes on Fashion — Katy Perry wore a Moschino gown shaped like a chandelier while Kacey Musgraves arrived as a life-size Barbie, also by Moschino. Those theatrical red-carpet looks are very much on-brand.
Moschino is part of the Italian luxury group Aeffe S.p.A. Moschino joined Aeffe in 1999, and in 2021 Aeffe took full control by acquiring the remaining 30 percent stake it did not already own. So while the name belongs to its founder, the business today sits inside an established Italian fashion group.
A couple worth knowing. In 2015 the graffiti artist Rime claimed the Moschino dress Katy Perry wore at that year's Met Gala copied his work; the case was settled in 2016. Separately, in 2016 Nordstrom pulled Moschino's pill-themed merchandise from its shelves after consumer pressure over allegations it trivialized the opioid epidemic.
