Narciso Rodriguez won worldwide attention in 1996 for the bias-cut silk slip wedding dress he designed for Carolyn Bessette's marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr.

Born in Newark in 1961 to Cuban parents and trained at Parsons alongside Isaac Mizrahi, Rodriguez worked under Calvin Klein and Anne Klein, and designed women's ready-to-wear for Loewe from 1997 to 2001. He launched his own label in 1997 with backing from LVMH, and twice won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award, in 2002 and 2003.

His clean, minimalist eye made history again in November 2008, when Michelle Obama wore a Narciso Rodriguez dress as Barack Obama first appeared as president-elect.

Narciso Rodriguez shopping FAQ

Is Narciso Rodriguez for Her worth buying?+

If you want a fragrance with genuine design pedigree behind it, it is a strong choice. Narciso Rodriguez for Her was the designer's first fragrance, launched in 2003, and it has stayed in the conversation as a modern signature ever since. The story behind it adds to the appeal: Rodriguez drew on a bottle of Egyptian musk oil he had been given in high school.

Why is Narciso Rodriguez for Her so popular?+

Its staying power comes from the same restraint that defines the designer's clothing, an elegant, musky character that feels chic without shouting. Launched in 2003 and inspired by a remembered Egyptian musk oil, it became a fixture of contemporary perfumery. The brand's clean, body-conscious aesthetic carries straight through into the scent.

What is Narciso Rodriguez best known for?+

Minimalist, body-conscious silhouettes. Narciso Rodriguez built his name on architectural precision and clean lines rather than ornament, an approach that runs from his runway womenswear through to the for Her fragrance. It is a quietly confident kind of glamour.

Who was Narciso Rodriguez and where is he from?+

He is an American fashion designer, born 27 January 1961 in Newark, New Jersey, the eldest child and only son of Cuban parents. He studied at Parsons in New York, where Isaac Mizrahi was a classmate, and his parents initially opposed his entering fashion.

What was the Carolyn Bessette wedding dress?+

It is the design that made Narciso Rodriguez famous. In 1996 he created the wedding dress for Carolyn Bessette, a friend and former Calvin Klein colleague, for her marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. The bias-cut silk slip was a minimalist departure from the voluminous bridal silhouettes of the era, and it brought widespread attention to his work.

When did Narciso Rodriguez launch his own label?+

In 1997, the year after the Carolyn Bessette wedding dress drew the fashion world's attention. He had previously worked as a design assistant at Calvin Klein and as Women's Design Director at Anne Klein before striking out on his own.

Did Narciso Rodriguez design for another fashion house?+

Yes. From 1997 to 2001 he served as women's ready-to-wear designer at the Spanish house Loewe, running that role in parallel with the launch of his own label. Earlier in his career he also worked as design director of Cerruti Arte.

Has Narciso Rodriguez dressed any notable public figures?+

Most famously, on 4 November 2008 Michelle Obama wore a Narciso Rodriguez dress at Grant Park in Chicago when Barack Obama first appeared as president-elect, and the dress drew substantial press. She returned to the designer for her final State of the Union appearance as First Lady. His Carolyn Bessette wedding dress remains his other defining moment.

What awards has Narciso Rodriguez won?+

He won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in both 2002 and 2003, the peak recognition for American womenswear. Earlier, in 1997, he took the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Best New Designer, marking him as a talent to watch from the very start of his own label.

How does Narciso Rodriguez compare to other minimalist American designers?+

He came up through the same lineage, having trained under Calvin Klein and worked at Anne Klein, so the clean American minimalism is in his DNA. What sets him apart is the body-conscious, almost architectural cut and the bias-driven slip dresses, of which the Carolyn Bessette gown is the touchstone. It is minimalism with a sharper sculptural edge.

Is the EDP or EDT of Narciso Rodriguez for Her the better pick?+

Both share the same musky, body-conscious character that defines the house, so the choice comes down to how present you want it to feel rather than which is better. Eau de parfum concentrations generally read richer and last longer, while lighter strengths sit closer to the skin. If you are new to the scent, try it on skin first, since musk reads very differently person to person.
