Established under Rafaella Apparel Group, the brand was among the first women's dress lines to offer its pants across a wide range of fits — "Modern," "Classic" and "Curvy" — a sales technique later mirrored by companies including Levi Strauss & Co. That fit-first thinking helped Rafaella win market share through the close of the 20th century, with appearances in O, The Oprah Magazine along the way.
After passing through Cerberus Capital Management, the brand was sold in January 2011 to Perry Ellis International for $70 million, which broadened its focus across dresses and sportswear. Despite the ownership changes, the company remains headquartered in New York City.
