Revue Thommen is a Swiss timepiece name with roots reaching to 1853, when the Société d'Horlogerie à Waldenbourg was founded by the community of Waldenburg to bring work to the valley.

In 1859 Gédéon Thommen and Louis Tschopp acquired and restructured the company; Thommen — also the founder of the Waldenburgerbahn steam railway — gave it his name. From 1905 it was registered as Revue Thommen AG, 'Revue' having served earlier as a brand name for its wristwatches. In 1916 the firm created its first aircraft chronograph for the Swiss Air Force, founding a long success as an aircraft-instrument supplier; in 1945 it commercialized that expertise with a pocket altimeter for alpinists.

In 2000 Revue Thommen AG licensed its wristwatch brand to Grovana so it could focus on aircraft instruments. In 2012 GT Thommen Watch AG bought the watch business's intellectual property and began reviving the brand, appointing Swiss Initiative Limited as sole license holder in 2015. The aviation company itself was rebranded Thommen Aircraft Equipment AG in 2015.

Revue Thommen shopping FAQ

Are Revue Thommen watches worth it?+

Many enthusiasts think so, with one caveat. The watches are widely regarded as solid, well-built Swiss timepieces, and the value case is strongest at street prices rather than full MSRP. If you find one of their automatic chronographs discounted, collectors tend to call it a genuine bargain for what you get.

Is Revue Thommen a good-quality watch brand?+

By reputation, yes. It is a Swiss firm producing luxury wristwatches with a long horological lineage, and its movements and case construction are generally praised as honest and durable. It is simply less famous than the big marques, which is part of why it can feel like a quiet value.

How does the Revue Thommen Airspeed compare to a Hamilton or Breitling pilot watch?+

It plays in the same pilot-chronograph spirit but from a heritage that earns it. Revue Thommen made the first aircraft chronograph for the Swiss Air Force in 1916, which laid the foundation for its success as an aircraft-instrument supplier, so the aviation cues are authentic rather than borrowed. Against Hamilton or Breitling it is a value-minded alternative with real cockpit roots.

When and where was Revue Thommen founded?+

It dates to the mid-19th century in Switzerland. In 1853 the Société d'Horlogerie à Waldenbourg was founded by the community of Waldenburg in Basel-Landschaft to make pocket watches and create work in the Waldenburg valley. That 1853 origin is why you often see the date on the brand's modern watches.

Where does the name Revue Thommen come from?+

It comes from a founder and an old brand name. In 1859 Gédéon Thommen and Louis Tschopp acquired the company, which was later renamed after Thommen; Revue had been used earlier as a brand name for the company's wristwatches, after they had first been marketed as GT watches, for Gédéon Thommen. From 1905 it was registered as Revue Thommen AG.

Does Revue Thommen really make aircraft instruments?+

Yes, and it is central to the brand's identity. After building the Swiss Air Force's first aircraft chronograph in 1916, the company supplied cockpit instrumentation from 1936 to 1943, including altimeters, airspeed indicators, vertical speed indicators and clocks. In 1945 it even launched a pocket altimeter for alpinists, with derivatives for parachutists made for decades after.

Did Revue Thommen make watches during the war years?+

It did. From 1939 to 1944, commissioned by the German government, the company produced watches for the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine under the brand Revue-Sport. These wartime pieces are a documented chapter in the brand's history rather than a rumor.

Who owns the Revue Thommen watch brand today?+

The watch and aviation sides have followed separate paths. In 2000 Revue Thommen AG licensed the wristwatch brand to the Swiss company Grovana so it could focus on aircraft instruments, and in 2012 GT Thommen Watch AG, a venture of Andreas Thommen, Roland Buser and Christopher Bitterli, bought the watch intellectual property and set about revitalizing the brand.

Is the watch business connected to today's aircraft-equipment company?+

They share roots but are now distinct. After the wristwatch business was spun off, the firm leaned into electronic aircraft equipment, dropped Revue from its name and rebranded as Thommen Aircraft Equipment AG in 2015, later moving from Waldenburg to Muttenz near Basel in 2016. The watches and the aviation supplier are separate operations sharing one heritage.

Should I buy a Revue Thommen new or pre-owned?+

Both routes work; the choice is mostly about price and reassurance. Buying new gets you full warranty and current production, while the pre-owned market often surfaces older Airspeed and diver models at strong value. Whichever you choose, buy from a reputable seller and confirm the movement and condition before committing.

When is the best time to buy a mid-range Swiss watch like a Revue Thommen?+

Watch much, hurry little. Lesser-known Swiss brands frequently appear at meaningful discounts through authorized retailers and end-of-season clearouts, so patience tends to pay. Decide on the model you want first, then wait for a trusted seller to offer it well rather than buying on impulse at full list.
