Founded in the early 1990s as a university project by Bruno Belamich (Bell) and Carlos A. Rosillo (Ross), the company first produced its watches with the German maker Sinn; that partnership dissolved in 2002, soon after Chanel became a minority shareholder, and production moved to Switzerland. Based in Paris with manufacturing in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the brand divides its work among Aviation, Marine and Vintage lines.
Starting with the BR-01 in 2005, Bell & Ross began making square watches built to resemble aircraft-cockpit instruments — the square-cased BR models becoming its signature. The company is the official watch supplier to the Escadron de Chasse 2/4 La Fayette and the French space programme, and in 1998 its Hydromax set a Guinness record for water resistance at 11,000 metres.
