River Island

From a Notting Hill market stall to a UK high-street fixture — trend-led fashion, designed entirely in-house.

River Island
Re-checked daily
Founded in 1948 by Bernard Lewis — who started with a fruit-and-veg stall on a Notting Hill bomb site — River Island has grown into a London-based fashion brand present in over 125 countries, still wholly owned by the Lewis family.

The chain has reinvented itself more than once: trading as Lewis Separates, then as the 1960s mini-dress pioneer Chelsea Girl, before the River Island name — inspired by Leonard Lewis's time on a boat on the Thames — took over the whole business in 1988.

Today it is a key UK high-street player with around 250 stores, all of its collections designed in-house at its West London head office. Past collaborators include Rihanna, who co-designed three collections in 2013, and Sofia Richie.

River Island shopping FAQ

Is River Island good quality and worth it?+

River Island sits firmly on the UK high street, known for trend-focused womenswear designed entirely in-house. Quality is best judged piece by piece — the brand's strength is on-trend design at an accessible price rather than heirloom construction. It's worth it if you want of-the-moment styling and are selective about fabrics and fit.

Is River Island a luxury brand?+

No — River Island is a high-street fashion brand, considered a key player on the UK high street with around 250 stores across the country. Its appeal is trend-led, in-house design at high-street prices, not luxury heritage. Think influential mainstream fashion rather than a luxury label.

River Island vs Zara — how do they compare?+

Both are mainstream trend retailers, but River Island has a distinct advantage worth knowing: its collections are entirely designed in-house at its West London head office, and it was one of the first vertical fashion retailers in the UK. That vertical model is how it turns trends around quickly, much like its high-street rivals.

Who owns River Island?+

River Island is a private company and remains fully owned by the Lewis family, through the Lewis Trust Group. The family has historically led the business and stays closely involved as non-executive directors. Founder Bernard Lewis was reported to still work five days a week at the head office at age 96.

When and where was River Island founded?+

The business was founded in 1948 by Bernard Lewis, who started by selling fruit and vegetables from a market stall on an old bomb site in Notting Hill. He soon shifted focus to women's clothing and began designing and making clothes in-house, selling the first own-made design — a white, lace-trimmed blouse — in 1950.

Why was River Island once called Chelsea Girl?+

Before the River Island name, the business traded as Chelsea Girl, rebranded in 1965 and named after its store on King's Road in Chelsea, then a hub of fashion and music. Chelsea Girl was an influential 1960s name that helped drive the mini dress trend — mini dresses grew from around 5–6% of sales to 50% between spring and autumn 1965.

Where does the name River Island come from?+

River Island launched in 1988 as a menswear store in Exeter, with the name inspired by Leonard Lewis's time spent on a boat on the Thames. The store performed so well that the whole business was rebranded from Chelsea Girl to River Island later that same year.

What does River Island sell beyond womenswear?+

River Island is best known for its trend-focused womenswear, but it also offers menswear, kidswear and even pet collections. Over the years it has added maternity, baby and a small beauty and fragrance range. All of its core ranges are designed in the UK at the London head office.

Can I buy River Island in the US?+

Yes. River Island launched online in the US and Canada in 2021, partnering with Nordstrom in the US and The Bay in Canada, and from 2022 select Nordstrom and The Bay stores began stocking it. The brand ships to around 125 countries globally through its own site and wholesale partners.

Did Rihanna really design for River Island?+

Yes. In 2013, Rihanna co-designed three collections for River Island alongside her personal stylist Adam Selman. The first launched with a show at London Fashion Week in January 2013, and the range was well received, with many lines selling out.

What was the Sofia Richie collaboration?+

In June 2022, River Island partnered with model and social-media star Sofia Richie on a summer capsule collection. The campaign was shot in Richie's native California, and the pieces were available both in stores and online — a good example of the brand's celebrity collaboration strategy.

How sustainable is River Island?+

In 2020 River Island launched a sustainability strategy built around 12 commitments aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and was named one of the Top 10 Fastest Movers on the Fashion Transparency Index 2020. It also runs a long-standing partnership with the children's charity Newlife, recycling and reselling donated garments.
