The name traces to a hand-sewn leather moccasin modeled on a shoe from Rockport, Massachusetts; when Saul Katz sourced the leather from a Brazilian tannery, he named it Rockport, and the shoes were eventually branded to match. Formed from the family's Highland Import business with $15,000, the company turned a profit every year, reaching nearly $100 million in sales by 1986, when it was sold to Reebok — later passing to Adidas.
Rockport is credited with popularizing walking for exercise and, through its RocSport shoe, with creating the modern lightweight, technology-infused comfort shoe. After ownership passed through Berkshire Partners, New Balance and Charlesbank, the brand was acquired by Authentic Brands Group in 2023; associated names include Aravon, Dunham and Cobb Hill.
