The brand was founded in July 2013 by Bruce R. Katz in Mill Valley, CA, a co-founder of the Rockport Shoe Company returning to an industry his family had worked in for generations. The name commemorates that legacy: "Samuel" for his grandfather Samuel J. Katz, who ran the Hubbard Shoe Company of Rochester, NH, from the 1930s.
Uppers and insoles are made from European-sourced leathers, most models use Vibram outsoles, and manufacturing is performed in Portugal — drawing on Katz's Rockport-era industry connections. Beyond casual and dress shoes, the line added golf and boat shoes in 2018, sold through the company's site, Nordstrom and Dillard's, and more than 500 independent retailers.
